Today’s Wordle from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #1957, for Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026, edited by Tracy Bennett. The answer uses five different letters, and only one of them is a vowel, so a guess that tests the vowel is a good start. Work down the clues one at a time, and only scroll to the last section if you want the answer itself.

How Wordle works

You get six tries to find a five-letter word. After each guess, a green tile means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the word at all. A letter that appears twice is only marked twice if you guess it twice.

Six clues, gentle to strong

  1. Part of speechit is a noun.
  2. Topicgrain that is ready to be ground, and a word that appears in the saying “grist for the mill.”
  3. Vowelsone vowel letter, I. It comes in the middle, as the third letter.
  4. Repeated letterno, all five letters are different.
  5. First letterG.
  6. Strong nudgeit ends with the letters ST and rhymes with “mist.”

Guessing tips for today

With a single vowel, a guess that puts I in the third spot can turn a tile green right away. A starter with I and common consonants, such as “stair” or “rinse,” shows whether the I, S and T are in the word. Because no letter repeats, you can spend each guess on new letters without testing doubles.
