Connections #1227 for Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026: two levels of hints for every group, the traps to avoid, then the full answers in a marked section at the end.
In this article
Today’s Connections from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #1227, for Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2026. The 16 words include a few that fit two groups at once, and the hardest group only makes sense when you read the words aloud. Below are two levels of hints for each color, then the full solution and an explanation of the traps, both in a marked spoiler section at the end.
Today’s 16 words
Chevron, Dock, Bell, Pencil, Poodle, Wrap, Mini, Minion, Walrus, Puppet, Close, Horseshoe, Arial, Stop, Stooge, End
How the game works
You sort the 16 words into four groups of four that share a link. You can make four mistakes before the game ends. The groups are color-coded by difficulty: yellow is the most straightforward, then green and blue, and purple is usually the trickiest, often built on wordplay.
Hints for each group
Yellow
- Hint 1: What a director says when the last scene is in the can.
- Hint 2: Four ways to say “bring it to a conclusion.”
Green
- Hint 1: Someone who does whatever the boss says.
- Hint 2: One is a dog breed, one is controlled with strings, and one is a small yellow cartoon helper.
Blue
- Hint 1: Look just above the upper lip.
- Hint 2: Styles named after a writing tool, a tusked sea mammal, a V-shaped stripe and a lucky charm.
Purple
- Hint 1: Say the words out loud.
- Hint 2: Each one sounds like an animated character: a mermaid, a bookish princess, one of seven dwarfs and a famous mouse.
Solving tips
Start with the group you are surest of, but before you submit, check whether any of your four could belong somewhere else. Today, several words look like they could finish a sentence, and at least two of them belong elsewhere. Saving the purple group for last is often the safest move, since its link only appears once the other words are gone.

Today’s Connections answers (spoilers)
Stop here if you still want to solve it yourself.
- Yellow, Finish: Close, End, Stop, Wrap
- Green, Lackey: Minion, Poodle, Puppet, Stooge
- Blue, Mustaches: Chevron, Horseshoe, Pencil, Walrus
- Purple, Homophones of Disney Characters: Arial (Ariel), Bell (Belle), Dock (Doc), Mini (Minnie)
Ariel is the heroine of The Little Mermaid, Belle of Beauty and the Beast, Doc is one of the dwarfs in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Minnie is Minnie Mouse.
Why the traps worked
Mini and Minion. They look like a pair, and Minions are famous cartoon characters. But Minions come from Illumination’s Despicable Me films for Universal, not from Disney. Minion is a word for an underling here, while Mini is the one that sounds like a Disney name.
Wrap and Dock. Wrap looks like it could be food or clothing, and Dock could be a boat word or mean to cut short. Both are decoys pulling you away from their real groups.
Poodle and Puppet. Poodle seems to be the odd dog out, but in British usage it is slang for someone who slavishly follows a more powerful person. Puppet carries the same meaning: someone whose strings are pulled by another.
Arial. It is best known as a typeface, which might send you looking for fonts. Spell it differently and it is a character from an animated film.
Pencil, Chevron, Horseshoe, Walrus. None of these looks related to the others until you think of facial hair.
We checked the solution against more than one published source before posting. Puzzle #1228 arrives at midnight.
