What is Cinco De Mayo?

Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday which is celebrated on 5th of May annually. The purpose of Cinco De Mayo is commemorating the victory which was gained by Mexicans against the French armies at III. Napoleon’s command. It is celebrated in United States of America and Mexico. 

The center of the celebrations is Puebla state of Mexico. In this state, Cinco De Mayo celebra-tions called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla. Mexican armies which were at General Ignacio Zarago-za Seguín's command, won a victory against French occupation forces in Battle of Puebla in May 5, 1862. That’s why, Mexican and American people chose 5th of May as celebration date. 

Even if the main battle continued and it took 5 years more to repulse French armies, Puebla be-came a iconic symbol for Mexico’s resistance against opposing forces. The city’s name changed as Puebla de Zaragoza after the battle.The battle field in Puebla, is used as a national park at the present time. 

Cinco De Mayo is celebrated with various ceremonies such as pageants, speeches and march pasts in United States of America and Mexico, especially in Puebla. In some states of United States of America which are densely populated by Mexican folk, the celebrations continue during the whole week. Local dresses and foods are essential items of Cinco De Mayo.

Cinco De Mayo is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day which is the most im-portant special day of Mexico. But, Mexico’s Independence Day is celebrated on 15th of Sep-tember.
