What is Constitution Day (Citizenship Day) ?

Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day, is a United States federal government observance which is celebrated on September 17 every year. The purpose of this special day is commemorating the adoption and creation of the United States Constitution. Also Constitution Day (Citizenship Day) is a federal holiday which honors all people who have become United States citizens ever since their birth. 

In 1787, September 17, Founding fathers of United States of America accepted the constiution of United States of America in Philedelphia. The slogan of this constitution was creating “a more perfect union”. Up to 21st of June, 1788, the constitution had been approved by nine states. 

At first, the name of this day did not correspond to its current name. In 1940, Congress created “I am an American Day” slogan and offered a special celebration day for this constitution. In 1952, August 2, this special day had been signed into law as “Citizenship Day” by Harry Truman who was the former president of United States of America. After four years, Congress offered to make these celebrations spread over a whole week. One more change was made to the event and Citizenship day started being called as Constitution Week by local people. 

Finally, in December 2004, Congress decided to enact that September 17 a federal holiday as Constitution Day. Since then, people in United States of America celebrate September 17 as Constitution Day and various ceremonies have been organized in this day. People memorialize the past and arrange some commemorations in Constitution Day. 

When is Constitution Day (Citizenship Day) ?

Constitution Day (Citizenship Day) is celebrated on 17th of September every year. The next Constitution Day is on Monday, September 17, 2018. In 2019, Constitution Day will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 17, 2019.
