What is Flag Day?
Flag Day is a special day which is celebrated on 14th of June every year. The purpose of this special day is commemorating the adoption of the flag of United States of America. The reason of this date to be chosen is that 14th of June is the date of the adoption of the flag in 1777. Also, its the same date which is correspond to United States Army’s birthday.
Continental Congress had changed the old Grand Union flag and attached a new design on June 14, 1777. Also, the number of the stars in the flag increased depends on the current number of the states.
Despite Bernard Cigrand’s and former President Woodrow Wilson’s pre existing efforts Flag Day did not accepted as a nationwide observance until August 1949. In August 1949 former president Harry Truman signed the legislation about making 14th of June as Flag Day.
Flag Day is also a part of the National Flag Week. United States’s flag represents freedom and it is a symbol of loyalty to the nation’s ideals. In Flag Day, American people remember and realize their loyalty and belief to their nation and country one more time. To honor this day, almost every people in United States of America display a flag at their homes and public places. Also, there are some organizations arrange in Flag Day which aim observe the holiday with street parades, special tournaments and different organizations.
Flag Day is a nationwide observance but even so it is not accepted as a public holiday in a lot of states of United States.
Many other countries also observe a flag day, it dates may vary.
