What is Halloween?
Halloween is a celebration which is actually based on Pagan and Christian origins but also secular and widespread at the present time. It is celebrated on 31st of October annually. The word of Halloween was shortened from the word of “All Hallow’s Eve”. This word is used by Western countries and in the Anglo-Saxon culture. It is a huge and magnificent festival in United States of America. With the influences of American culture, the tradition of Halloween has been become widespread in all over the world.
The origin of Halloween is Sammhein Festival which was celebrated by Pagan Celts in Britain. Celts blessed the end of the summer and they blessed their dead in these times. They started big fires for keeping the evil souls away. People were wearing masks and different costumes for not coming to bad souls’ attention. Because of these traditions Sammhein Festival identified with witches, fairies and demons in time.
At 7th century, Pope IV Boniface switched the day of Saints Day to 1st of November. 31st of October is accepted as Saints Day’s Eve and its name got changed into Halloween.
The symbol of Halloween is a smiling pumpkin. People carve the pumpkin and they give a smiling shape to it. After carving, they light a candle and put into the pumpkin. Children wear different and scary costumes and they go from door to door for asking candies or making jokes. Their most common slogan is “Trick or treat?” Also, a lot of parties and fancy dress balls are arranged for adults. Although Halloween was banned for different reasons several times, it is still marked by celebrations in many countries at the present time. Also it became a popular children holiday in United States of America.
