What is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday and it is celebrated in United States of America, Canada, some of the Caribbean Islands and Liberia. Also, there are some festivals or holidays which are quite similar to Thanksgiving Day in Germany and Japan. The purpose of Thanksgiving Day is giving thanks for the preceding year and the harvest in that year. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in United States of America. But the celebration date varies by countries. For instance, in Canada, Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October.

Thanksgiving Day’s history has some different origins but in every country the celebrations ground on blessing and praying for the harvest. In North America, it is based on the Protestant Reformation and some English traditions. According to English traditions, Thanksgiving Day and some special religious services of this day gained importance during the English Reformation. In those days, Thanksgiving Day was born as a reaction against the religious days in Catholic calendar.

In consequence of the reform, the number of the church holidays had reduced to 27. Some Puritans wanted to eliminate all the church holidays including Christmas Day and Easter. They wanted to swap these days for different special holiday called Days of Fasting and Days of Thanksgiving. Eventually, they achieved their object and Thanksgiving Day showed up.

In 1817, Thanksgiving Day was accepted as a national holiday by New York State. In 1863, former president Abraham Lincoln decided to make Thanksgiving Day a national and official holiday for all states of America. From that day on, all the presidents of United States of America published a celebration message for Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November.
