What is World Teachers’ Day?
World Teachers’ Day is a special day which is celebrated on the 5th of October annually. The purpose of World Teachers’ Day is honoring teachers from all over the world and appreciating them for their efforts.
The background of World Teachers’ Day dates back to 1966. In 1966, October 5, representatives of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization and International Labour Organization signed the "Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers” just after the Special Intergovernmental Conference on the Status of Teachers in Paris was closed. In the 29th session of United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization’s General Conference the "Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel” had accepted. It happened in 1997, November 11.
The first World Teachers’ Day was held in 1994, October 5. Then, first action about this special day came from Canada Post in 2002. They used a postage stamp for drawing attention to World Teachers’ Day.
World Teachers’ Day is not a world embracing observance. Some countries such as Turkey, Czech Republic, India, Iran, Peru, Malaysia and Slovakia celebrate Teachers’ Day in different dates. Nevertheless, a lot of country in the world had accepted 5th of October as World Teachers’ Day.
Various organizations and ceremonies are arranged in World Teachers’ Day in all around the world. These events set sight on honoring teachers and expressing gratitude to them. In addition to local conferences, parades and celebrations; there are some widespread organizations arranged in some countries such as The Australian Education Union, The Canadian Teachers Federation, The National Education Association, The All India Secondary Teachers Federation, etc… These organizations play an important role in World Teachers’ Day events.

World Teachers’ Day is on Friday, October 5, 2018. World Teachers’ Day in 2019 will be celebrated on Saturday, October 5, 2019.
