Checked Oct. 26, 2026. Dates below come from College Board's Fall 2026 score release table for in-school testing.

College Board will release Fall 2026 Preliminary SAT (PSAT) and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) scores to students on Thursday, Oct. 22, Thursday, Nov. 5 or Thursday, Nov. 12, 2026, according to its score release table for in-school testing. Which date is yours depends on when your school submitted its tests. The Oct. 22 date has passed, so students who tested later should expect Nov. 5 or Nov. 12.

Which PSAT score date is mine?

Testing for the fall 2026 PSAT/NMSQT runs from Oct. 1 to Oct. 30, 2026, College Board says, and schools set their own test day within that window. The score date follows the day your school submitted its answer sheets. College Board publishes one table for SAT School Day, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and PSAT 8/9 together.

The weekdays are our addition; College Board lists the dates without them. If you are unsure which row applies to your school, ask your counselor when the school submitted its tests. A student whose school submitted by Oct. 23 sees scores on Nov. 5, and one whose school submitted by Oct. 30 sees them on Nov. 12. A separate College Board page says scores are typically available online 2-4 weeks after the test administration.

How do students see PSAT scores?

According to College Board’s PSAT/NMSQT guide for students and families (Fall 2026), U.S. students who took the PSAT/NMSQT and gave a mobile phone number during testing can view their scores in the BigFuture School app. Students age 13 and older may also use a personal College Board student account to view additional insights online. Schools receive a PDF score report titled “Your Score Report.”

How is the PSAT/NMSQT scored?

The same College Board guide sets these ranges:

ScoreRange
Total score (two sections added)320 to 1520
Reading and Writing (RW) section160 to 760
Math section160 to 760
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Selection Index48 to 228

College Board’s benchmarks are a Reading and Writing score of 430 and a Math score of 480 for 10th grade, and 460 and 510 for 11th grade.

How do you work out the Selection Index?

The guide’s rule is to double the Reading and Writing section score, add the Math section score, and divide the sum by 10. The formula reads 2RW + M, divided by 10. College Board’s own example is a Reading and Writing score of 620 and a Math score of 500, which gives 174. We ran the same formula on a few more score pairs.

Reading and WritingMathTotal scoreSelection Index
16016032048
5505501100165
6205001120174
6506001250190
7007001400210
7607601520228

The first and last rows match the lowest and highest Selection Index values College Board lists. Because Reading and Writing counts twice, a 10-point gain there moves the index by 2 points and the same gain in Math moves it by 1.

What happens with National Merit?

College Board says about 1.3 million test takers meet the entry requirements each year, and about 50,000 will earn 2026 PSAT/NMSQT scores high enough to qualify for recognition. Those students will be notified of their standing through their high schools in September 2027. Entry for scholarships offered in 2028 is determined by responses on the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT. We did not use selection cutoffs because they are not part of the College Board sources for this story.
