What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is a special day which is celebrated on 22nd of April every year. The purpose of Earth Day is drawing attention to Earth’s future and environmental hazards that people caused. It is a symbolic day which aims protect our world and increase environmental consciousness.
Earth Day was first observed by John McConnell in National United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization World Conference in 1969. John McConnell offered making 21st of March as Earth Day because this date is also an equinox. Then, the first action about environmental issues which included a huge public opinion support, organized by Denis Hayes in 1970, April 22. More than 20 million people participated this big action and a lot of conferences and seminars arranged in this day. Thanks to these efforts, the first Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act accepted in 1970.
Earth Day is not a formal and public holiday, that’s why schools, businesses and government offices are not closed during this day. It is common to memorialize Earth Day with some symbols such as a picture of a tree, drawing of planet earth, flowers, plants and leaves. But the most common symbol of Earth Day is a recycling symbol. The purpose of these symbols is making people remember the importance of world’s future and the obligation of preserving world from ourselves. The Earth Day Flag was also designated by John McConnell and he observed this flag as all people’s flag. Earth Day is usually celebrated with various ceremonies which draw attention to air, soil and water pollution.
