What is World Environment Day?
World Environment Day (WED) is a special day which is celebrated on the 5th of July annually. The main purpose of this special day is heightening awareness of preserving the environment and preventing environmental pollution. World Environment Day is the main occasion for promoting awareness of environmental issues such as global warming, sustainable consumption, marine pollution, air pollution and human overpopulation and it was held by United Nations.
In 1972, June 5, World Environment Conference was held in Stockholm, Sweden. At the first day of this conference, United Nations Environment Programme formally decided to accept a special day as World Environment Day. Also, all the member governments searched for a solution for environmental problems in this conference. Starting from this conference, first World Environment Day was held in 1974.
From that day on, World Environment Day is celebreted with various ceremonies every year. Each year, World Environment Day has a different theme which draws attention to a different point about environmental issues. The first World Environment Day’s theme was “Only one Earth during Expo ’74”. Over the course of many years, a lot of theme became the main topic of World Environment Day such as Human Settlements, Development Without Destruction, Ozone Layer Environmental Concern; Lands Loss and Soil Degradation, A Tree for Peace, One Earth One Family, Poverty and the Environment – Breaking the Vicious Circle, Connect with the World Wide Web of Life, Your Planet Needs You – Unite to Combat Climate Change… Also, all these celebrations have been hosted in different cities from different countries.

When is World Environment Day?
World Environment Day 2018, has already passed. It was on Tuesday, June 5 and its theme was Beat Plastic Pollution. It was hosted in New Delhi, India. The next World Environmental Day is on Wednesday, June 5, 2019.
