Is There a Sales Tax Holiday on Black Friday or Cyber Monday 2026? What One State List Shows

In this article
There is no general state sales tax holiday on Black Friday, Nov. 27, or Cyber Monday, Nov. 30, 2026, in the list kept by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). Shoppers pay normal state and local sales tax on those days.
What the ITEP list shows
ITEP’s “Which States Have Sales Tax Holidays in 2026?”, published Aug. 6, 2026, lists 20 states with sales tax holidays this year. Almost all are in summer for back-to-school shopping. A few are for weather-related or energy-efficient products or for firearms. None is a general late-November or Thanksgiving weekend holiday.
What that means for Black Friday and Cyber Monday
Black Friday is Friday, Nov. 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, Nov. 30, 2026. Since the list has no holiday that covers either day, the price on the tag or the checkout page will have tax added as usual. We found no state offering tax-free online purchases that weekend.
Check your state before you buy
Holidays can still be added, and a holiday can be narrower than a list suggests. Check your state revenue department’s website before you shop. The store hours for the day are in our Black Friday store hours guide, and the weekend’s date lineup is on our November 2026 important dates page.
Why the summer holidays do not carry over
The holidays on ITEP’s list cluster in the weeks before school starts, which is why that list reads like a back-to-school calendar. A holiday in August does not change what a shopper pays in November. The few exceptions on the list are for specific product types, such as weather-related items, energy-efficient products or firearms, so they do not turn a whole shopping weekend tax-free.
A short routine for the weekend
Before Nov. 27, look at your state revenue department’s page and note whether anything has been added since August. On Black Friday and Cyber Monday, compare the final total with tax, not only the sticker price. Keep your receipts and order confirmations afterward. The printable checklist below lists the same steps for the fridge door.
