Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) has winter break from Monday, Dec. 21, 2026 to Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, and spring break from Monday, Mar. 29 to Friday, Apr. 2, 2027, according to its “2026-2027 Calendar Key Dates” (Traditional Calendar, PDF). The first day of school is Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, and the last day is Wednesday, June 9, 2027. The calendar footnote says the Board of Education approved it on April 8, 2025. The next dates are Friday, Oct. 30, the end of quarter 1, and Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 2-3, which are teacher workdays with no school for students.

When are CMS schools closed in 2026-27?

The “Teacher/Staff Holiday and Workday Calendar” (PDF) says school is not in session for students on the holidays, breaks and teacher workdays it lists, unless a make-up day is scheduled. The table puts each one in date order with its weekday.

Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, is listed on the CMS teacher and staff holiday calendar, whose footnote says school is not in session for students on the holidays it lists unless a make-up day is scheduled. Does Election Day or Thanksgiving week mean a longer break?

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. The calendar does not label it, but Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 2-3, are both teacher workdays, so students are off both days. Thanksgiving Break is Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26-27, and Wednesday, Nov. 25, is a teacher workday. Together, students are off Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 25-27, 2026.

What is the longest stretch without school?

Winter break is the longest listed break: Monday, Dec. 21, 2026 to Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, which is 10 weekdays. The calendar does not print a return day. The next weekday after the break is Monday, Jan. 4, 2027, which is our reading and not a printed date. Plan the holiday weeks on the December 2026 calendar.

The longest stretch in spring is ours to point out. Thursday, Mar. 25, 2027 is a teacher workday, Friday, Mar. 26 is Good Friday, and spring break follows from Monday, Mar. 29 to Friday, Apr. 2. Students are out from Thursday, Mar. 25 through Friday, Apr. 2, which is 9 calendar days and 7 weekdays, unless a make-up day is used. See the March 2027 calendar for how those days fall.

Which days are make-up days?

The Teacher/Staff Holiday and Workday Calendar lists five make-up days in 2027. Three fall on days that are otherwise off, and two fall after the last day of school.

A listed make-up day is not a scheduled class day. The footnote says school is out on the listed days “unless a make-up day is scheduled.” CMS lists closures and make-up days through the Calendar Quicklink on cmsk12.org and says it updates them regularly. We have not confirmed any closure or make-up change after the date of the PDFs.

Which days are early release and when do quarters end?

The Traditional Calendar lists four Early Release Days, all Wednesdays. Our source summary does not give the dismissal times, so check the PDF or your school.

Thursday, Jan. 21 ends quarter 2, and Friday, Jan. 22 is a teacher workday with no school for students.

When does the school year start and end?

Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026 is the First Day of School. Wednesday, June 9, 2027 is the Last Day of School, and the quarter 4 end date is the same day. June 10 and 11 are listed as make-up days.
