Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026, also called Gurpurab, is Tuesday, Nov. 24, according to the central government holiday list for 2026 issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) in India. The Office of the Accountant General (Punjab), part of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG), lists the same date. Counting from Guru Nanak’s birth in 1469, 2026 marks the 557th birth anniversary. The Purnima (full moon) tithi that the festival follows starts on Monday, Nov. 23 and ends on Nov. 24, and the table below converts those times to U.S., UK and Canadian clocks.

The DoPT list is an Office Memorandum dated 3 July 2025. Its site was unreachable when we checked, so we read the list as reproduced by StaffNews. It marks the day as a closed (compulsory) holiday for central government offices, not a restricted holiday. The Accountant General (Punjab) page was last updated on Jan. 22, 2026.

Some websites show other dates for Guru Nanak Jayanti in November 2026. The two official lists above agree on Nov. 24, and we use that date only.

What time does the Purnima start in the US, UK and Canada?

Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on the Kartik Purnima, the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik. Drik Panchang, a panchang (almanac) publisher and not an official body, gives the Purnima tithi for New Delhi as beginning at 11:42 p.m. Indian Standard Time (IST) on Nov. 23, 2026 and ending at 8:23 p.m. IST on Nov. 24. We converted those times with IST as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) plus 5:30. U.S. clocks return to standard time after Nov. 1, so every U.S. time below is standard time.

For a reader in the Eastern, Central, Mountain or Pacific zones, the tithi ends on the morning of Nov. 24. The date of the festival stays Tuesday, Nov. 24 in all of these places, as it is on the Indian lists.

Is Guru Nanak Jayanti a holiday?

In India it is a closed holiday for central government offices, as the DoPT list shows, and the Accountant General (Punjab) lists it among Punjab holidays. We did not check whether Indian stock exchanges are closed on Nov. 24, and the Reserve Bank of India has not posted its November list, so do not assume markets or banks are shut: ask your bank. We found no official proclamation of the day in the United States, United Kingdom or Canada.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) publishes a Nanakshahi calendar for 2026-27 at sgpc.net, but we could not find the Guru Nanak date line on it, so we do not cite a date from it.

How is Gurpurab observed?

Customs vary by gurdwara, and local gurdwaras set their own schedules, so we give no local times here. In general:

• Akhand Path. A continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh scripture, that ends on the day of the festival.
• Nagar Kirtan. Processions with hymns, often held in the days before the festival.
• Prabhat Pheri. Early-morning processions of devotees singing hymns.

Check your own gurdwara’s notice board or website for the Akhand Path start, the Nagar Kirtan route and the langar (community meal) hours.

When is Guru Nanak Jayanti 2027?

The 2027 date is not yet published on the official lists we found. The festival follows the lunar calendar, so it moves against the Gregorian calendar each year. We will update this story when an official list is available.
