Six of the eight states whose 2026 holiday pages we read close state offices on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2026: Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, Georgia, Indiana and Arkansas. New York and Maryland list only Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25. Each state sets its own calendar for state employees, and the table below uses each state’s own page and its own name for the day, read Nov. 6, 2026. Dec. 24 is not a federal holiday, as the story on whether Christmas Eve is a federal holiday explains.

Arkansas has a second official page, “State Offices Closed - Christmas Eve,” dated Dec. 24, 2026, on the state administrative services site. The “Not listed” rows mean Dec. 24 is not on that state’s official 2026 list, so it is a regular workday on that list. The printable on this page carries the same table on one sheet, and the December 2026 printable calendar shows the whole month. For the date itself, see When is Christmas Eve?.

Why do Georgia and Indiana list Washington’s Birthday on Dec. 24?

Georgia’s page says Washington’s Birthday, Monday, Feb. 16, “will be observed Thursday, December 24.” So Georgia moves its Presidents’ Day-type holiday to Christmas Eve. Indiana’s list shows “Washington’s Birthday” on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2026. Indiana’s page does not call the day Christmas Eve or say it was moved, so the table gives its wording as printed. Both lists name Dec. 24 as a state holiday date, which is why they count as closed above. For the Thanksgiving weekend, see our story on state holidays the day after Thanksgiving.

How many days off in a row do state workers get?

The counts below come from the dates on each state’s list plus the weekend, and they assume no other days off.

Dec. 26 is a Saturday. Texas says offices “will not be closed on another day when designated holidays fall on a Saturday or a Sunday,” so Texas gives no weekday off for it. We did not count a run for Texas, Georgia, Indiana or Arkansas, because only their Dec. 24 entries are part of what we read.

What does the Texas skeleton crew rule mean?

The Texas Comptroller’s page marks Christmas Eve Day as “Office closed” and says “a state agency must have enough state employees on duty to conduct business during the skeleton crew holidays listed.” In plain terms, closed offices can still have some staff working. The page does not say which agencies keep staff on, so check with your agency.

Which states could not be confirmed?

We did not confirm the day on the state’s own page for Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Florida, Wisconsin, Ohio and other states. They are not marked closed or open. Check with your agency’s human resources office or your union contract, which can differ from a state’s published list.

Could federal offices close on Dec. 24?

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) federal holidays page lists “Friday, December 25: Christmas Day” and not Dec. 24. As of Nov. 6, 2026, we found no 2026 order closing federal offices on Dec. 24. In 2025, an executive order closed federal agencies on Dec. 24 and Dec. 26; that was last year’s order.
