Federal income tax returns for 2026 are due Thursday, April 15, 2027. That date also covers extension requests, 2026 individual retirement account (IRA) and health savings account (HSA) contributions and the first estimated tax payment for 2027. The rest of the year’s deadlines follow the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) usual pattern, with a few moved by weekends and holidays. Here is every 2027 federal deadline for individuals and small businesses.

Why some dates move

Federal law, 26 U.S.C. 7503, says that when a tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday, it moves to the next business day. In 2027 that rule shifts five deadlines:

  • Jan. 31 is a Sunday, so W-2s, 1099-NECs and fourth-quarter Form 941 are due Monday, Feb. 1.
  • Feb. 15 is Presidents’ Day, so the 1099-B and 1099-S statements move to Tuesday, Feb. 16.
  • Feb. 28 is a Sunday, so paper information returns are due Monday, March 1.
  • July 31 is a Saturday and Oct. 31 a Sunday, so the second- and third-quarter Form 941 dates move to Aug. 2 and Nov. 1.
  • Jan. 15, 2028 is a Saturday and Jan. 17 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so the last 2027 estimate is due Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2028.

Washington, D.C.’s Emancipation Day can push Tax Day when April 15 falls on a weekend or the holiday is observed on April 15 itself. That does not happen in 2027: the holiday falls on Friday, April 16, after the deadline. See our list of federal holidays in 2027 for the other days that can shift a deadline.

What the IRS has not announced yet

Two pieces of the 2027 tax year are still pending:

  • The 2027 tax brackets and standard deduction. The IRS publishes inflation adjustments in a revenue procedure each fall. For tax year 2026, it released them in October 2025 (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), setting the standard deduction at $16,100 for single filers, $24,150 for heads of household and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly. The 2027 figures had not been published as of Oct. 20, 2026.
  • The start of filing season. The IRS announces each January when it will begin accepting returns; in recent years the season has opened in the second half of January.

We will update this story when the IRS publishes both.

Planning the year

Many people who pay estimated tax are self-employed or have income without withholding, such as investment gains or rental income. The payments are not evenly spaced. There are three months from the January payment to April, two from April to June, three from June to September and four from September to January. Set a reminder a week ahead of each one.

Social Security recipients can match the payment calendar to the 2027 Social Security payment dates. Businesses on a non-calendar fiscal year should check our fiscal year calendar guide, since their return dates shift with the year-end. Copy the deadlines onto a 2027 printable yearly calendar or the January and April monthly pages, or print the one-page tax calendar below. Confirm the dates in the 2027 edition of IRS Publication 509 once the agency issues it.
