There are 11 federal holidays in 2027, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), and an unusual number of them move. Juneteenth, Independence Day and Christmas all land on weekends, so each is observed on a nearby Friday or Monday. And because New Year’s Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get Friday, Dec. 31, 2027 off too, for 12 paid holidays in the calendar year.

OPM lists the last row in its 2028 schedule, but the day off falls in 2027.

The weekend rule

Federal law fixes the 11 holidays in 5 U.S.C. 6103. When one falls on a Saturday, most federal employees get the Friday before; when it falls on a Sunday, they get the Monday after. In 2027 that rule moves four holidays:

  • Juneteenth: June 19 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, June 18.
  • Independence Day: July 4 is a Sunday, so it is observed on Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas Day: Dec. 25 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, Dec. 24.
  • New Year’s Day 2028: Jan. 1, 2028 is a Saturday, so it is observed on Friday, Dec. 31, 2027.

OPM uses the names in the law, so Presidents’ Day appears as “Washington’s Birthday.” Many state governments and businesses use other names or observe other days.

Long weekends in 2027

Ten of the 12 days off fall on a Monday or a Friday. The Mondays and the first Fridays create three-day weekends: Jan. 1-3, Jan. 16-18, Feb. 13-15, May 29-31, June 18-20, July 3-5, Sept. 4-6 and Oct. 9-11. Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 25 gives a four-day weekend for anyone who takes Friday, and the Christmas and New Year’s Fridays make back-to-back three-day weekends in December.

What is closed on federal holidays

Federal offices and the U.S. Postal Service close on federal holidays. Banks follow the Federal Reserve, which has one twist: when a holiday falls on a Saturday, Federal Reserve Banks stay open the Friday before. That means many banks are open on Friday, June 18, Friday, Dec. 24 and Friday, Dec. 31, 2027, even though federal offices are closed. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Fed closes the following Monday, so banks close on Monday, July 5. The stock market is different again. It closes for Good Friday, which is not a federal holiday, but stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, and on Dec. 31, 2027. Our 2027 stock market holiday calendar has the full list.

Private employers are not required to give federal holidays off. Many offer most of them, and state and local governments set their own schedules.

Thanksgiving comes early

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov. 25, 2027, three days after its earliest possible date of Nov. 22. See when Thanksgiving falls for other years, and our explainer on why Thanksgiving 2026 is Nov. 26.
