UK Bank Holidays 2027: Every Date for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

The UK has eight bank holidays in England and Wales in 2027, nine in Scotland and 10 in Northern Ireland, according to GOV.UK. Two things stand out. Easter is early, with Good Friday on March 26. And Christmas Day falls on a Saturday, so the Christmas and Boxing Day bank holidays move to Monday, Dec. 27 and Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2027.

Substitute days in 2027

When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a weekday is taken instead. GOV.UK lists three substitute days in 2027:

• Monday, Jan. 4 in Scotland, because Jan. 2 is a Saturday.
• Monday, Dec. 27, for Christmas Day on Saturday, Dec. 25.
• Tuesday, Dec. 28, for Boxing Day on Sunday, Dec. 26.

That gives most workers a four-day Christmas weekend, from Saturday, Dec. 25 to Tuesday, Dec. 28. New Year’s Day 2028 also falls on a Saturday, and GOV.UK already lists its substitute day: Monday, Jan. 3, 2028 (with Scotland’s 2nd January moving to Tuesday, Jan. 4).

Planning around the long weekends

Five Monday bank holidays in England and Wales make 2027 easy to plan around: Easter Monday, early May, late May, the August bank holiday and the Christmas substitute day on Dec. 27. Taking four days of leave from Tuesday, March 30 to Friday, April 2 turns Easter into a 10-day break, from Good Friday to Sunday, April 4. Four days after the late-May bank holiday, June 1-4, give a nine-day break.

Bank holidays are not automatically paid days off. Whether you get them depends on your employment contract, and many shops and services open on some of them.
