Canada Statutory Holidays 2027: The 10 Federal General Holidays and What Happens When Christmas Hits a Weekend

Federally regulated workplaces in Canada have 10 general holidays in 2027, under the Canada Labour Code. The year opens with New Year’s Day on Friday, Jan. 1 and ends with the awkward pair of Christmas Day on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, which pushes the paid days off onto nearby working days.

These apply to federally regulated employers such as banks, airlines, railways, telecommunications companies and the federal public service. Most workers fall under a provincial or territorial employment standards law instead.

When a holiday falls on a weekend

The Canada Labour Code has two rules, and 2027 tests both.

For New Year’s Day, Canada Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, an employee whose holiday falls on a non-working day is entitled to a holiday with pay on the working day immediately before or after it. In 2027 that covers Christmas Day and Boxing Day, which land on a Saturday and a Sunday.

For the other holidays, a holiday that falls on a non-working day may be added to the employee’s annual vacation or granted on another day by agreement. None of those fall on a weekend in 2027, since Good Friday, Victoria Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving are always on a Friday or a Monday.

Long weekends in 2027

Five federal holidays create three-day weekends: Good Friday (March 26-28), Victoria Day (May 22-24), Labour Day (Sept. 4-6), Thanksgiving (Oct. 9-11) and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1-3). Canada Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Remembrance Day all fall on a Thursday, so a single vacation day on the Friday turns each into a four-day weekend.

Provinces set their own lists

Statutory holidays for most employees are set by each province and territory, and the lists differ. Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and New Brunswick observe Family Day on the third Monday of February, which is Feb. 15, 2027. Quebec observes National Holiday (Fête nationale) on June 24 and National Patriots’ Day on the Monday before May 25. Remembrance Day is not a statutory holiday in Ontario or Quebec, and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not one in every province. Check your provincial employment standards office before you plan around a date.

Federal public servants also get Easter Monday (March 29, 2027) and the civic holiday on the first Monday of August (Aug. 2, 2027) under their collective agreements.
