If your mail ballot has a signature problem, some states give you days after Election Day on Nov. 3, 2026 to fix it: Florida until 5 p.m. Thu., Nov. 5 and Oregon until Tue., Nov. 24, according to each state’s statute or Secretary of State. This is called curing. The table below turns each state’s written rule into a 2026 calendar date, with the weekday checked. Other states are not confirmed here; check your county election office.

Our mail ballot arrival deadlines by state cover when a ballot must be postmarked or received. This story starts after that point: the ballot is in, and the county has found a problem with the envelope.

What does it mean to cure a mail ballot?

Curing means fixing a problem with a returned mail or absentee ballot envelope so the ballot can be counted. Problems include a missing signature, a signature that does not match the one on file, and missing identification. The election office contacts the voter, and the voter returns a form or affidavit by the state’s deadline. Rules differ by state; only the states below are confirmed.

Ballot cure deadlines in 8 states

Dates are computed from each state’s rule, with weekdays checked. The Colorado date is our computation from the Secretary of State’s rule (see below).

MinnesotaNone after the electionReplacement ballot or voting in personNo cure process; see below (Minnesota Statutes 203B.121)

Nevada’s tracker, myballot.nv.gov, shows ballot status. Voters in other Nevada counties should check the notice from their own county.

Why is Arizona’s missing-signature deadline Election Day?

Arizona treats two signature problems differently. A signature that does not match can be corrected until the fifth business day after the election, which is Tue., Nov. 10, 2026. A missing signature has a much shorter window: “not later than 7:00 p.m. on election day,” Tue., Nov. 3, under Arizona Revised Statutes 16-550. A voter who learns of a missing signature after Nov. 3 is past that deadline.

How does Colorado’s Veterans Day change its cure deadline?

Colorado’s Secretary of State sets the deadline at 11:59 p.m. MT on the eighth day after Election Day, and moves it to the next day when that day is a state or federal holiday. The eighth day after Nov. 3 is Wed., Nov. 11, which is Veterans Day, a federal holiday. By that rule the deadline moves to 11:59 p.m. MT Thu., Nov. 12, 2026. That is our computation from the published rule, not a date the office printed.

Does Minnesota let voters cure a ballot after the election?

No. Minnesota Statutes 203B.121 says there is no other reason for rejecting an absentee ballot beyond the grounds it lists, and it sets no cure process. A ballot rejected at least five days before the election gets a replacement ballot mailed. If it is rejected within five days of the election, the official “must attempt to contact the voter.” The remedy is a replacement ballot or voting in person by Election Day.

What happens to mail ballots after Election Day?

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) says “election night results are unofficial and never final” and that “each state has different rules for when mail, provisional, and military and overseas ballots can be counted.” In short:

  1. Election night: Results are unofficial.
  2. Counting and review: Each state sets when mail, provisional and military and overseas ballots are counted.
  3. Cure: Where the state allows it, the election office contacts a voter whose envelope has a problem, and the voter fixes it by the deadlines above.
  4. Canvass: Officials complete the canvass, and in many states audits.
  5. Certification: The EAC says “once the canvass (and in many states, audits) has been completed, the election results are certified as final.” It adds that “state and local election officials are the authorities on election certification dates.”

For those dates, see when 2026 election results are certified by state. California’s official canvass runs from Thu., Nov. 5 to Thu., Dec. 3, 2026, according to the California Secretary of State’s general election calendar (revised Sept. 24, 2026). If you are still holding a ballot, our story on dropping off a mail-in ballot on Election Day covers that.

What is the 45-day rule for military and overseas voters?

Federal law, 52 U.S. Code 20302(a)(8)(A), requires states to send ballots to absent military and overseas voters who asked for them at least 45 days ahead “not later than 45 days before the election.” For Nov. 3, 2026 that day was Sat., Sept. 19, 2026, which the California calendar also lists. The rule sets when ballots go out, not the cure windows above.

Which states are not confirmed here?

We could not confirm 2026 cure rules for Texas, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Washington, New Jersey, Illinois, Utah, California, Maryland, Massachusetts and North Carolina, and we give no date for them. In Pennsylvania, we did not confirm a statewide cure rule for 2026, so ask your county. Check your ballot in your state’s official tracker, and answer any letter, email, text or call from your county election office right away. The EAC links to state election sites at eac.gov/voters.

Frequently asked questions

What is ballot curing?

Curing means fixing a problem with a returned mail or absentee ballot envelope, such as a missing signature, a signature that does not match the one on file or missing identification, so the ballot can be counted. The election office contacts the voter, and the voter returns a form or affidavit by the state's deadline.

How do I know if my ballot needs curing?

Check your ballot status in your state's official tracker, such as Nevada's myballot.nv.gov, or on your county election office's website; the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) links to state sites at eac.gov/voters. Answer any letter, email, text or call from the election office right away.

Can I fix a missing signature after Election Day in Arizona?

No. Under Arizona Revised Statutes 16-550, a missing signature must be fixed by 7:00 p.m. on Election Day, Tue., Nov. 3, 2026. A signature that does not match can be corrected until the fifth business day after the election, Tue., Nov. 10.

Does every state allow ballot curing?

No. Minnesota's statute has no cure process after the election. A ballot rejected at least five days before the election gets a replacement ballot, and an official must attempt to contact a voter whose ballot is rejected within five days of it.
