Elf on the Shelf 2026: When Scout Elves Return, 29 Nightly Ideas and a Free Printable

Most Scout Elves return the night of Thanksgiving or on Dec. 1, according to The Elf on the Shelf’s November prep checklist. In 2026 that means Thursday, Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving Day, per the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)) or Tuesday, Dec. 1. By our count that leaves 29 nights to Christmas Eve for the first date and 24 for the second. When do Scout Elves return in 2026?

The Elf on the Shelf blog says: “Most Scout Elves return the night of Thanksgiving or on December 1.” The page also says “this is the month to finalize your elf’s big arrival date” and allows for “somewhere in between.” The page shows no date, so we do not call it a 2026 page. The brand says Scout Elves return each season, and we use its word.

OPM lists Thanksgiving Day 2026 as “Thursday, November 26.” Both counts include the first and the last night. The brand’s pages we read give no departure date. Some families choose Christmas Eve as the last night; that is a family choice, so the table stops there only because it is the last night before Christmas Day. What should you prepare before the Scout Elf returns?

The checklist advises preparing supplies for the first 3 to 5 days and suggests you “set some calendar alerts so you’ll remember a few days before your elf’s big arrival.” That is the job of the idea table and the printable below. The free one-page sheet lists all 29 nights with the date, both night counts and a tick box. T numbers count from Thanksgiving night and D numbers from Dec. 1, so a family on the Dec. 1 start reads the D column and ignores the five nights before it.
