Lunar New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, Feb. 6, the first day of the Year of the Goat. New Year’s Eve, with its reunion dinner, is Friday, Feb. 5, and the 15-day season ends with the Lantern Festival on Saturday, Feb. 20. Korea marks Seollal one day later, on Sunday, Feb. 7. The dates come from the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO), which publishes the official conversion between the Chinese lunar calendar and the Gregorian one.

Because New Year’s Day lands on a Saturday, most families in the United States can hold the Eve dinner on Friday night after work, sleep in, and then spend the whole weekend on visits, meals and the first round of red envelopes without taking a day off. The printable festival calendar lays out all 16 days, from Eve to the Lantern Festival, with room to write in visits and plans.

Why the date changes every year

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the Moon, while the year is kept in step with the seasons. New Year’s Day is usually the second new moon after the winter solstice, so it always lands between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20.

In 2027 that new moon comes at 15:56 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on Feb. 6, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. In Beijing it is 11:56 p.m., just four minutes before midnight, so Feb. 6 is New Year’s Day in China. Four minutes decide it. In Seoul the clock already reads 12:56 a.m. on Feb. 7, which is why Korea’s Seollal comes a day later. Vietnam’s Tet follows the same calculation for Hanoi time, where the new moon falls at 10:56 p.m. on Feb. 6.

The same new moon also matters for Ramadan 2027, which begins two days later, and it brings an annular solar eclipse over South America and West Africa.

Year of the Goat: who is a Goat?

2027 is a Fire Goat year, called ding-wei in Chinese. The Goat (also translated Sheep or Ram) is the eighth of the 12 animals, after the Horse and before the Monkey.

2003Feb. 1, 2003Water
2015Feb. 19, 2015Wood
2027Feb. 6, 2027Fire

Zodiac years start at Lunar New Year, not Jan. 1. That trips people up. Someone born on Jan. 20, 1979, for example, is a Horse, because the Goat year began eight days later. Our zodiac chart lists every year from 1924 to 2031 with its exact start date, taken from the HKO tables, so January and February birthdays can be checked quickly.

Planning the season

If you are hosting, Friday, Feb. 5 is the night for the reunion dinner, and red envelopes are traditionally handed out from New Year’s Day. A February 2027 printable calendar is handy for the 15 days of visits; for the January run-up, use a January 2027 calendar. For the whole year, including the festival dates above, see our 2027 printable yearly calendar or the Chinese lunar calendar in the downloads.
