Is MLK Day a federal holiday?

Yes. Title 5 of the U.S. Code, section 6103, names “Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr., the third Monday in January” among the federal holidays. Congress added the day by Public Law 98-144 in 1983. The National Archives’ Reagan Library says President Ronald Reagan signed the bill, H.R. 3706, into law on Nov. 2, 1983, and that the first official Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was celebrated on Jan. 20, 1986.

Are national parks free on MLK Day?

The National Park Service (NPS) did not list MLK Day as a fee-free day in 2026. Its 2026 list, on a passes page last updated Oct. 9, 2026, is Feb. 16, May 25, June 14, July 3 to 5, Aug. 25, Sept. 17, Oct. 27 and Nov. 11.
