International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2027 is Wednesday, Jan. 27, the date the United Nations (UN) General Assembly designated for an annual day of commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) says it is “the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.” The U.S. Days of Remembrance follow a different date: Yom HaShoah, Tuesday, May 4, 2027. What is International Holocaust Remembrance Day?

The UN’s observance page says General Assembly Resolution 60/7 established the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme and “also designated 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.” The USHMM describes it as a time to remember the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum gives the history behind the date: “On 27th January 1945, Red Army soldiers liberated over 7000 prisoners of Auschwitz.”

How does the UN day differ from Yom HaShoah and Days of Remembrance?

Readers often look for one date and find two. The USHMM page says the UN General Assembly designated Jan. 27. The USHMM’s Days of Remembrance page says the U.S. Congress established Days of Remembrance as the nation’s annual commemoration of the Holocaust, and the museum’s Remembrance Day Calendar lists the Yom HaShoah dates below.

What has the UN announced for 2027?

Not yet. The UN has not announced a 2027 theme or a memorial ceremony time. For 2026, its page “2026 Holocaust Remembrance and Education” gave the theme “Holocaust Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights,” and the 2026 ceremony was Tuesday, 27 January 2026, at 11:00 a.m. EST in the General Assembly Hall at UN Headquarters. Those are 2026 details, not 2027.
