Native American Heritage Month 2026 runs from Sunday, Nov. 1 to Monday, Nov. 30, and as of Nov. 1 the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) has posted no 2026 theme. Its page still shows the 2024 theme, “Weaving together our past, present and future”. Below: the events the federal Native American Heritage Month website lists, nine books from NYC Public Schools, classroom and library ideas, and a free printable checklist.
What is the Native American Heritage Month 2026 theme?
The BIA page “National Native American Heritage Month” still carries its 2024 content on Nov. 1, 2026: the 2024 celebrations heading, the #RockYourMocs2024 hashtag and the line “Our theme is Weaving together our past, present and future.” That is the 2024 theme. Some websites repeat it as the 2026 theme, but the BIA has not posted a 2026 one as of Nov. 1. The BIA page lists these earlier themes:
| Year | BIA theme |
|---|---|
| 2024 (latest on the page) | Weaving together our past, present and future |
| 2023 | Celebrating Tribal Sovereignty and Identity |
| 2022 | Revitalizing Indigenous Connections |
| 2020 | Resilient & Enduring: We are Native People |
| 2019 | Honor the Past, Embrace the Future |
What are the dates of Native American Heritage Month?
The month is November. In 2026 it starts on a Sunday and ends on Monday, Nov. 30. It is an observance, not a federal holiday; our Native American Heritage Day story covers Public Law 111-33 and the status of Friday, Nov. 27.
| Year | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Sat., Nov. 1 | Sun., Nov. 30 |
| 2026 | Sun., Nov. 1 | Mon., Nov. 30 |
| 2027 | Mon., Nov. 1 | Tue., Nov. 30 |
The BIA page and the federal site also use the older name, National American Indian Heritage Month. “Indigenous Peoples” is a broader term. For a specific nation, use the name that nation uses for itself.
Which events are listed for November 2026?
The federal Native American Heritage Month website, hosted by the Library of Congress, lists these on its events page:
| Date | Event | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Thu., Nov. 5 | Artful Evenings: “Water’s Edge” with artist Sky Hopinka, Smithsonian | 6 to 9 p.m. ET |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | “Always Becoming: Next Chapter”, Smithsonian; performances, films, gallery tours | 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET |
| Fri., Nov. 27 | Native American Heritage Day | Observance, not a federal holiday |
The federal page prints “EDT” for these, but Eastern Time is on standard time from Nov. 1, so they are written ET here. It does not name a venue, so confirm the place, tickets and times on the Smithsonian listing. We could not confirm other Smithsonian events; check the National Museum of the American Indian calendar. The National Park Service (NPS) page for the month has stories, places, resources and kids’ activities.
Which books by Native authors does NYC Public Schools list?
NYC Public Schools lists nine titles on its Native American Heritage Month page. We grouped them by format.
| Format | Title | Author |
|---|---|---|
| Picture book | Fry Bread | Kevin Noble Maillard |
| Picture book | We Are Water Protectors | Carole Lindstrom |
| Middle grade | Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids | Edited by Cynthia Leitich Smith |
| Middle grade | The Sea in Winter | Christine Day |
| Young adult | A Snake Falls to Earth | Darcie Little Badger |
| Young adult | Elatsoe | Darcie Little Badger |
| Young adult | Firekeeper’s Daughter | Angeline Boulley |
| Young adult | Rez Ball | Byron Graves |
| Young adult | The Marrow Thieves | Cherie Dimaline |
For more titles, the Children’s Book Council keeps an “Indigenous Peoples Books & Resources” page and the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) has a Native American Heritage Month page. We did not take titles from either.
What student activities work for each grade band?
These are suggestions from us, not an official curriculum.
- Grades K-5: Read one picture book by a Native author aloud and talk about what the story says. Pair it with a map lesson: find a tribal nation’s own website and note the name it uses for itself.
- Grades 6-8: Read a short story from an intertribal collection, then write a paragraph on what it shows about a living community today. Use a Library of Congress primary source and ask who made it and why.
- Grades 9-12: Run a book circle on a young adult novel by a Native author. Compare it with a nation’s official page, and watch a film by an Indigenous filmmaker.
A teacher note: skip paper headdresses, “dress like” days and invented “tribal” patterns. They turn living cultures into costumes.
What can a library program include?
- A display of books by Native authors, including the titles above.
- Links to official websites of tribal nations, so patrons read what nations say about themselves.
- Library of Congress primary sources on a table or a screen.
- Language programs offered by the nation itself.
- A film screening by Indigenous filmmakers.
- A paid Native guest speaker, not a volunteer slot.
Is there an official color for Native American Heritage Month?
None of the federal partner sites we checked publishes an official color palette. Colors carry specific meanings within particular nations, so a generic “Native colors” scheme for posters or bulletin boards risks getting that wrong. Use the colors a nation itself shares for its own materials.
How do I plan the month with a printable?
The checklist below splits the month into four weeks: Nov. 1-7, Nov. 8-14, Nov. 15-21 and Nov. 22-30. It marks the two Smithsonian dates and Heritage Day. Pair it with our November 2026 printable calendar, and see when Thanksgiving falls before you plan the last week. Our November 2026 calendar printable story has a month grid to pair with it.
