What's Open on Thanksgiving 2026? Grocery Stores, Walmart and Costco Hours

We update this list as stores confirm their 2026 hours. The statuses below come from each company's own holiday-hours or newsroom page, checked Oct. 24, 2026. Always confirm your local store before you go.

Most big-box and warehouse stores are closed on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, 2026, while many grocery and convenience stores stay open with shorter hours. Walmart, Costco, Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Aldi have confirmed closed doors. Whole Foods Market and Dollar General say most of their stores open. What’s open and closed on Thanksgiving 2026

The table lists what each company has published for 2026 where available, with the year of the source so you can see how current it is. A standing policy means the chain announced a permanent closure in an earlier year and has kept it.

Walmart. In its Oct. 7, 2026 season announcement, Walmart said its “stores will be closed again on Thanksgiving and Christmas this year.” Walmart.com stays open for online orders.

Costco. The warehouse club’s holiday closures help page lists Thanksgiving Day among the days its warehouses close. Costco.com continues to take orders.

Target. Target said in a 2021 fact sheet that “Target stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day moving forward.” That policy still holds, and the company has not announced a change for 2026.

Best Buy. Best Buy announced in 2020 that it would close stores on Thanksgiving Day. It has not restated the policy for 2026, so treat the closure as its last published position and confirm your store.

Home Depot and Lowe’s. Home Depot’s 2026 holiday store hours list Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26, as closed. Lowe’s said in its 2026 holiday release that its stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Aldi. Aldi’s store information page lists Thanksgiving Day among the four days it closes each year, along with New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

Whole Foods Market. Whole Foods says many of its stores open on Thanksgiving with modified hours. Hours vary by location, so check the store’s page before you shop.

Dollar General. Dollar General’s newsroom says most of its stores are open on Thanksgiving to help with last-minute cooking supplies. Hours differ by store, so check yours.

Walgreens. For Thanksgiving 2025, Walgreens’ Holiday Hub said most stores were closed while its 24-hour locations stayed open. The company has not yet posted a 2026 note, so this is labeled as the 2025 statement.

Not yet confirmed for 2026

Several large grocery and pharmacy chains have not published Thanksgiving 2026 hours as of Oct. 24. We are not giving them a status here, because last year’s hours are not a promise for this year. Check each chain’s store locator or call your local store: Kroger, Publix, H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, Sam’s Club, CVS, Safeway and Albertsons, Wegmans, Meijer, Starbucks and Cracker Barrel. Mail, banks and the stock market

Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so government and financial services pause for the day.

The U.S. Postal Service lists Thanksgiving among its holidays and does not deliver regular mail or open retail windows that day. The Federal Reserve observes Thanksgiving Day, so banks generally close their branches, though automated teller machines and apps keep working. The New York Stock Exchange is closed Thursday, Nov. 26 and holds a shortened session on Friday, Nov. 27, closing at 1 p.m. ET.
