Today’s Connections from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #1237, for Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, edited by Wyna Liu. One group is parts of a camera, another is things around a theater stage, one is a phrase that follows the word throw, and the last is made of misspelled fruit. Four words can cover a window, and they are spread across three groups. Below are two levels of hints for each color, then the full solution and an explanation of the overlaps in a marked spoiler section.

Today’s 16 words

Demon, Pit, Hands, Wings, Shutter, Glum, Curtain, Shade, Drape, Flash, Rug, Grange, Lens, Pillow, Backdrop, Viewfinder

How the game works

Sort the 16 entries into four groups of four. You can make four mistakes. The groups run from yellow to green, blue and purple, with purple the group that depends most on wordplay.

Hints for each group

Yellow

  • Hint 1Pieces of the equipment used to take a photograph.
  • Hint 2One lets in light for a moment, one is a glass element, one opens and closes, and one is what you look through to frame the shot.

Green

  • Hint 1Places and hangings you would see at a live play.
  • Hint 2A painted scene behind the actors, a cloth that opens and closes the show, the sunken space for the orchestra, and the offstage areas to the side.

Blue

  • Hint 1Each word can come right after the word throw.
  • Hint 2A sofa cushion, a floor covering, an insult delivered with attitude, and slang for fighting.

Purple

  • Hint 1Each word is a fruit with one letter swapped, and the swap is the first letter.
  • Hint 2Change the first letter to get a sour yellow citrus fruit, a bunch-forming vine fruit, a stone fruit, and a round citrus fruit that shares its name with a color.

Solving tips

Start with purple, because the swapped first letters are a pattern you can test on each word. Then treat the window coverings as one problem: Shutter, Curtain, Shade and Drape each fit more than one group, so place the unambiguous words first. Leave blue for last, since Hands and Shade only make sense once you try them after throw.

  1. Parts of a CameraFlash, Lens, Shutter, Viewfinder
  2. Around a Theater StageBackdrop, Curtain, Pit, Wings
  3. Throw ___Hands, Pillow, Rug, Shade
  4. Fruit With First Letter ChangedDemon (lemon), Drape (grape), Glum (plum), Grange (orange)
The four groups as the solved board shows them, easiest to hardest. Drawn from the official puzzle data published by The New York Times.

Why the traps worked

Window coverings. Shutter, Curtain, Shade and Drape can all cover a window. Shutter belongs to the camera, Curtain to the stage, Shade to the throw group and Drape to the fruit group.

Drape and Grange. Read alone, Drape looks like cloth and Grange looks like a farm building. Here each loses its first letter to become a fruit: Drape turns into grape and Grange into orange.

We checked the solution against the puzzle’s official data before posting. Puzzle #1238 arrives at midnight.
