We counted every letter in the 31 answers, counting a repeated letter each time it appears. The count covers 155 letters in all.

E led by a wide margin, in 14 of the 31 answers. R was in 13 answers and Y in 11, and no answer used Y twice.

Peeve is the only answer with a letter three times, three Es in a five-letter word.

Which answers had only one vowel, or none?

Psych (#1943, Wed., Oct. 14) has no A, E, I, O or U, so a guess built around vowels would have found nothing. Only Y does the work of a vowel. Twelve more answers had exactly one of the five vowels: Ritzy, Shack, Dimly, Strew, Bumpy, Shady, Stink, Wrest, Penny, Trill, Dress and Grist. Peeve and Yahoo had three vowels each, the most of the month.

What this tells you for November

These are patterns in last month’s words, not a forecast of any answer. They can still shape how you play.

• Spend early guesses on common letters. E, R and S together made up 43 of the 155 letters in October’s answers.
• Try Y at the end. Eight of 31 answers ended in Y, more than any other final letter.
• Allow a repeated letter. Ten of 31 answers repeated one, so ruling out doubles early would have been wrong about once in three days.
• Do not count on vowels. Psych had none, and 12 more answers had only one, so a vowel-heavy opener can come back mostly gray.
