Victor Schmitt built the New York Times (NYT) Crossword for Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, and Will Shortz edited it: a 15-by-15 grid with 74 clues. Ten of the clues end in a question mark, so the page below explains how each of those tricks works, without naming an answer. Every clue also has a hint of its own, and the full answers wait at the bottom.

Ten question-mark clues in Tuesday’s grid

In the official data, ten clues end in a question mark. Five of them are the long theme entries; the other five are shorter.

  • 4-Across, “Butter up?” Read “butter” as a job done in a kitchen, with “up” as part of the phrase. The answer is a five-letter cooking verb.
  • 18-Across, “Michael Jordan and Anatole France?” Look at the surnames, not the people: each one is also the name of a nation. The answer is a two-word phrase for men from outside the city, 11 letters run together.
  • 28-Across, “Faith Hill and Sally Field?” The same trick: both surnames are words for open ground. The answer is a phrase for women who rent out rooms, 10 letters.
  • 34-Across, “Jenny Slate and Emma Stone?” This time both surnames are building materials. The answer is a phrase from a 1980s pop hit, and at 13 letters it is the longest entry in the grid.
  • 41-Across, “John Snow and Robert Frost?” Here both surnames are kinds of cold weather, and the answer names the people who forecast it on TV, 10 letters.
  • 49-Across, “Merger site?” The “merger” is two people joining, not two companies. Think of the spot where the joining is made official; five letters.
  • 53-Across, “Sabrina Carpenter and Anita Baker?” The fifth pair: both surnames are trades. The answer is a phrase for women focused on their jobs, 11 letters. Once one of the five falls, the other four solve faster.
  • 10-Down, “Piece of mind?” “Mind” points at the brain, and “piece” asks for one of its sections. Four letters.
  • 12-Down, “Word before Day, Queen or I?” The answer is one three-letter word that fits in front of all three. Test each phrase in turn.
  • 24-Down, “Candy wrappers?” The wrapper here is a container, not paper. It is something people break open at a party to get the candy out. Seven letters, plural.

What the long entries have in common

The grid has 189 letters and 36 black squares. By length, the 74 entries break down as 20 of 3 letters, 14 of 4, 18 of 5, eight of 6, five of 7, two of 8, two of 9, two of 10, two of 11 and one of 13.

Five entries run 10 letters or longer, and all five go Across: 18-Across, 28-Across, 34-Across, 41-Across and 53-Across. They fill rows 3, 6, 8, 10 and 13 from the top. Their clues are the same kind, each naming two people, and all five are among the ten question-mark clues above. Once one falls, the pattern helps with the rest. The longest entries running Down have 9 letters: 4-Down and 33-Down.

Our NYT Crossword page holds the solving basics. With a 13-letter entry across row 8 in this grid, the crossing Down entries give you most of its letters.
