The New York Times (NYT) Sunday Crossword for Nov. 8, 2026, titled “Mixed Results,” was constructed by Simeon Seigel and edited by Will Shortz: a 21-by-21 grid with 140 clues. The title hints at a gimmick that touches six rows, and this page maps it by clue number without naming a single answer. Every clue gets a hint that opens on a tap, and the answers wait at the bottom.

Six woven entries behind the title “Mixed Results”

Six clues in the data carry a plus sign between two short phrases: 27-Across, 33-Across, 58-Across, 66-Across, 90-Across and 96-Across. Each is 13 letters long. The plus sign means the entry is a blend: answer the two phrases separately, then shuffle their letters together, each answer keeping its own order, until they fill the 13 squares. In all six, one part has six letters and the other seven.

A blend alone would leave a solver with a string that reads as neither part, so each long entry has a partner. The six “See” clues (26-Across, 36-Across, 55-Across, 68-Across, 88-Across and 100-Across) each point to a long entry and want a 7-letter answer that says what the blend means in plain terms. That is the “mixed results” of the title: two sets of results from one pair of clues. The partner always sits in the same row as its long entry, with one black square between them.

Solving tip: fill the partner clue first, or the crossings, and the blend often shows its seams, with the letters of one part appearing in order between gaps.

Nine wordplay clues in Sunday’s grid

Nine clues end in a question mark. No explanation below names an answer.

  • 40-Across, “All-star lineup?” The “all-star” is not an athlete. Think of the most famous names in entertainment, ranked by a letter and a word for entries in a series. Five letters.
  • 50-Across, “Petty cash holder?” The holder is a person, not a box. Read “holder” as someone who will not let go of money. Five letters.
  • 69-Across, “Pro tip?” The tip is a lean of the head, and “pro” is the side that votes yes. Three letters.
  • 103-Across, “Attempt at a royal flush?” Drop the poker hand. “Flush” works as in driving someone out, and the royal is a ruler. Ten letters, two words run together.
  • 111-Across, “Home of the first family?” The first family here lived long before any White House. Think of a famous garden in Genesis. Four letters.
  • 3-Down, “Handful of prayers?” A handful is literal: items strung together and passed through the fingers as each prayer is said. Eight letters, plural.
  • 12-Down, “Missing tour dates?” The tour is a stint of service, not a concert run, and “missing” describes the person. Four letters, an acronym.
  • 38-Down, “Call from a ref who doesn’t count?” In a ring, the count is a slow tally to ten. This referee ends the bout without making it. Three letters, initials.
  • 77-Down, “Worthy of some time?” “Some time” is a sentence handed down by a judge. The answer describes what a court could do about an offense. Eight letters, ending in a suffix meaning “able to be”.

How Sunday’s grid is built

The grid is 21 by 21, which is 441 squares: 74 are black and 367 hold a letter. It has 140 entries, 63 Across and 77 Down.

By length, the 140 entries break down this way: 28 of 3 letters, 34 of 4, 36 of 5, 12 of 6, 16 of 7, four of 8, four of 10 and six of 13. There are no entries of 9, 11, 12 or more than 13 letters. All six 13-letter entries run Across, in rows 4, 6, 10, 12, 16 and 18. So do the four 10-letter entries: 22-Across and 24-Across in row 3, and 103-Across and 104-Across in row 19. The four 8-letter entries are 3-Down, 15-Down, 74-Down and 77-Down, so no Down entry is longer than 8.

The six pointer entries make up six of the sixteen 7-letter entries. The rest of the 7-letter entries are 63-Across, 65-Across and 4-Down, 8-Down, 9-Down, 13-Down, 81-Down, 83-Down, 85-Down and 87-Down.

Other clue types, counted from the list: four clues are fill-in-the-blank with a blank line, 9-Across, 41-Down, 57-Down and 87-Down. Five clues open with a quotation mark: 9-Across, 21-Across, 31-Across, 33-Down and 85-Down. Five flag a shortened answer with “for short,” “in brief” or “abbr.”: 6-Down, 9-Down, 17-Down, 61-Down and 73-Down. One more clue, 37-Down, asks for the initials of a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

With six 13-letter blends to untangle, the rules for the daily grid are on our NYT Crossword page.

Frequently asked questions

Who made today's NYT Crossword?

Simeon Seigel constructed the Nov. 8, 2026 grid and Will Shortz edited it, according to the puzzle data. Its title is "Mixed Results".

Why do some clues have a plus sign in them?

A clue such as "Remark + Gripping tool" has two parts, and its answer is a single entry in which the answers to both parts are shuffled together, each keeping its own letter order. Today six 13-letter entries work this way.

What do the "See" clues in today's grid do?

Each "See" clue sends you to one of the six 13-letter entries and wants a seven-letter phrase that says what the shuffled entry means. The pointer entry sits in the same row as the entry it points to, separated by one black square.
