The New York Times (NYT) Midi Crossword for Sunday, Nov. 8, 2026, is a nine-by-nine grid by Tarun Krishnamurthy with 30 clues, titled “Delhi-cate Subject.” Five entries run the full width of the grid. Each clue below has a hint that stays shut until you open it, and the answers wait in a marked spoiler section at the end.

What “Delhi-cate Subject” points to

The puzzle data gives the title as “Delhi-cate Subject.” Read it aloud and the city name stands in for a sound-alike, which is the kind of joke the whole puzzle is built on. The grid’s real instruction sits in one clue: 7-Across, “New Delhi monument described as a “creative reworking of the Arc de Triomphe” … or a hint to this puzzle’s circled letters.” So the answer to 7-Across is a landmark in the Indian capital, and it also points at whatever the circled squares spell.

The saved data holds letters but no circle markers, so we cannot say which squares are circled. Open the grid in the NYT app to see them, then use the 7-Across clue as your guide. The same clue also tells you the 7-Across answer is worth solving early, because the title and the circles both lead back to it.

Row 3Clue 11, Across9
Row 7Clue 21, Across9

The trickiest clue in the grid

The least literal clue is 17-Down, “Awards show figure who sounds like its second and third letters.” There is no question mark to warn you. The answer is a person who runs a stage, and the clue says that when you pronounce the word, it matches two letters of the alphabet that sit inside it, positions two and three. It has five letters. If you are stuck, read your candidate aloud and ask whether it sounds like a pair of letters followed by another sound.

Frequently asked questions

Who made the NYT Midi Crossword for Nov. 8, 2026?

Tarun Krishnamurthy is the constructor and Ian Livengood is the editor, as listed in the puzzle's official data. The grid is nine squares wide and nine tall.

What does the 7-Across clue mean by circled letters?

The clue reads "New Delhi monument described as a "creative reworking of the Arc de Triomphe" ... or a hint to this puzzle's circled letters". It gives one answer two jobs: a landmark in New Delhi, and a clue to whatever the circled squares spell. The saved puzzle data lists letters only and does not say which squares are circled, so check the circles in the NYT app or on the printed grid.

Why does 17-Down mention its own second and third letters?

Its clue is "Awards show figure who sounds like its second and third letters". The answer is a word that, said aloud, is the same as two letters of the alphabet read in a row, and those two letters are inside the word itself. Say your candidate out loud and compare.
