The Social Security Administration (SSA) publishes the 2026 schedule as Publication No. 05-10031, and its rule is that a payment due on a weekend or federal holiday is paid the business day before. Why does Veterans Day change one payment date?
Social Security pays by birthday group on the second, third and fourth Wednesdays of the month. In November 2026 the second Wednesday is the 11th, which is Veterans Day, a federal holiday. Because SSA pays the business day before a holiday, the 1st-to-10th group is paid Tuesday, Nov. 10. The other two Wednesday groups keep their dates. Two SSI payments are dated in December. SSI is normally paid on the 1st, and Jan. 1, 2027 is New Year’s Day, a Friday and a federal holiday, so January’s payment is moved to Thursday, Dec. 31. Put both on your December 2026 printable calendar.
When does the 3.6% COLA start?
American Broadcasting Company (ABC) News reported on Oct. 14, 2026 that Social Security benefits will increase 3.6% beginning in January, the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2027. SSI recipients get the higher amount in the Dec. 31 payment. The December Social Security payments in the table above are November benefits, so they use 2026 amounts.
The January 2027 dates are Wednesdays, Jan. 13, 20 and 27. For the 3rd-of-the-month group, Jan. 3, 2027 is a Sunday, and the payment has been reported as moving to Thursday, Dec. 31, 2026; check SSA’s schedule for that date.
