Form 1099-K Threshold for 2026: $20,000 and 200 Transactions, and When the Form Arrives

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says payment apps send a 2026 Form 1099-K only above $20,000 and 200 transactions. Copies are due Monday, Feb. 1, 2027.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says a payment app or online marketplace must report your 2026 payments on Form 1099-K only when they total more than $20,000 and come in more than 200 transactions. The test is in the “Instructions for Form 1099-K (12/2026),” and both conditions must be met. Below is a table we computed for example sellers, who sends the form, and the 2027 dates with their weekdays, including the Monday, Feb. 1, 2027 date for copies sent to recipients.

What is the Form 1099-K threshold for 2026?

We read the IRS pages in this story on Nov. 6, 2026. The instructions say a third party settlement organization (TPSO), the company that settles payments between buyers and sellers on an app or marketplace, reports a payee only if for the calendar year “the gross amount of total reportable payment transactions exceeds $20,000” and “the total number of such transactions exceeds 200.” IRS Publication 1099 (2026) puts it the same way: over $20,000 in total payments and over 200 in total transactions.

The IRS consumer page “Understanding your Form 1099-K,” reviewed Oct. 28, 2026, says the same for payment apps and online marketplaces and adds that they “may send you a Form 1099-K with lower amounts and/or transactions.”

The instructions count the gross amount “without regard to any adjustments for credits, cash equivalents, discount amounts, fees, refunded amounts, shipping amounts, or any other amounts.” A refunded sale still counts toward the $20,000 and 200 tests.

Why some sources still say $600

The IRS newsroom release IR-2025-107, dated Oct. 23, 2025, says the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), Public Law 119-21, “retroactively reinstated the reporting threshold in effect prior to the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021” (ARPA). Section 70432 of the law is titled “Repeal of revision to de minimis rules for third party network transactions.” The 2025 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns still say $600 for 2026. That text predates the law; the 2026 Form 1099-K instructions and Publication 1099 (2026) carry $20,000 and 200 transactions.

Will an app send you a 1099-K for 2026? Examples

We applied the IRS rule to sample sellers on a payment app. The rule is “exceeds” for both numbers, so landing exactly on a limit does not trigger the form. The app may still send one, as the IRS notes above.

Payments received in 2026TransactionsRequired to send a form? Why
$25,000150NoOver $20,000, but 150 is not over 200
$18,000400NoOver 200, but $18,000 is not over $20,000
$21,000201YesOver $20,000 and over 200
$20,000300No$20,000 does not exceed $20,000
$30,000200No200 does not exceed 200

A seller whose sales run through a card processor is a different case. The instructions write the $20,000 and 200 exception for third party network transactions, and they say every payment settlement entity that submits instructions to transfer funds to a payee’s account “must file an information return (Form 1099-K) with respect to each participating payee.” We did not find a minimum for payment card transactions in the instructions. Ask the processor which form it plans to send.

Publication 1099 applies the same test to backup withholding for calendar years beginning after 2024: a TPSO withholds only if payments are over $20,000 in over 200 transactions, or if payments to the payee in the preceding calendar year were reportable.

When will the 2026 Form 1099-K arrive?

Publication 1099 gives “January 31 for most returns” as the statement date and says a due date that falls on a Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday moves to the next business day. Jan. 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so copies go to recipients by Monday, Feb. 1, 2027. Our W-2 and 1099 deadline story lists the other information-return dates and the 2027 penalties.

What to do with a 1099-K you did not expect

The IRS consumer page says to note payments from friends and family as non-business in the app when you can; it gives “sharing the cost of a car ride or meal, receiving money for birthday or holiday gifts” as examples. If a form arrives in error or with wrong figures, fact sheet FS-2023-07, which the IRS published in 2023, says to contact the issuer and keep the correspondence. It also says a personal item sold at a loss is reported on Schedule 1 with offsetting entries, and gains go on Form 8949 and Schedule D. We did not check line numbers on the current Schedule 1.

Whether or not you receive a form, the IRS says you “must still report any income on your tax return.” For other year-end money dates, see our year-end money deadlines for 2026 and the car loan interest deduction rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Form 1099-K threshold for 2026?

For payment apps and online marketplaces, more than $20,000 in total payments and more than 200 transactions, per the IRS instructions for Form 1099-K (12/2026) and Publication 1099 (2026). Both must be met.

Will I get a 1099-K from Venmo or PayPal for 2026?

Only if the payments for goods or services you received through the app exceed $20,000 in more than 200 transactions, or if the app chooses to send one anyway. The IRS says you may get a form below the threshold. We did not read either company's own policy.

Is the 1099-K threshold $600 for 2026?

No. The 2026 Form 1099-K instructions and Publication 1099 (2026) carry $20,000 and 200 transactions. The 2025 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns still say $600 for 2026; that text predates the law that reinstated the old limit.

When will I get my 1099-K for 2026?

By Monday, Feb. 1, 2027, by our computation from the IRS rule that a statement due January 31 moves to the next business day when it falls on a weekend. Jan. 31, 2027 is a Sunday.

What if I get a 1099-K for money that was not income?

The IRS says to contact the form's issuer and keep your correspondence. In fact sheet FS-2023-07, published in 2023, it also explains how to report a personal item sold at a loss and where gains go (Form 8949 and Schedule D).

Do I report the income if I get no 1099-K?

Yes. The IRS says that whether or not you receive a Form 1099-K, you must still report any income on your tax return.
