American Education Week 2026: Nov. 16-20 Daily Themes From the NEA

American Education Week 2026 runs Nov. 16-20, Monday to Friday, according to the National Education Association (NEA), which lists a different theme for each day. The week opens with Kickoff Day on Nov. 16 and ends with Substitute Educators Day on Nov. 20. Below is the day-by-day list and a one-page printable of the five themes.

Where does the week fall around Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, Nov. 26, so American Education Week sits in the week before Thanksgiving week. That is our own arithmetic from the two dates, not an NEA rule. Districts set their own break dates; our Thanksgiving break list for school districts covers those, and the November 2026 dates list shows the rest of the month.

What is Education Support Professionals Day?

Wednesday, Nov. 18 is Education Support Professionals Day, per the NEA, which says the day was first celebrated in 1987 after the NEA’s Representative Assembly. The NEA publishes an Education Support Professionals (ESP) Day toolkit and more ideas at nea.org/espday.

How did American Education Week start?

The NEA says the first observance took place Dec. 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and the American Legion. A year later, the then U.S. Office of Education joined as a cosponsor, and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) followed in 1938. Counting from 1921, 2026 is 105 years later (our arithmetic).
