The Great American Smokeout is Thursday, Nov. 19, 2026, the third Thursday in November, held by the American Cancer Society (ACS). The ACS invites smokers to “start your smoke-free journey” that day. We built a one-page quit-day planner to go with it: the quit date, five quit-day steps, three free help lines and a milestone calendar. It is below, with the dates and sources behind it.
What date is the Great American Smokeout in 2026?
The ACS page says the event is on “the third Thursday in November.” It does not print the 2026 date, so we computed it from that rule. Nov. 1, 2026 is a Sunday, which makes the Thursdays Nov. 5, 12, 19 and 26. The third is Nov. 19.
That is one week before Thanksgiving, which is Thursday, Nov. 26 (when is Thanksgiving). Put it on the November 2026 printable calendar next to the holiday week, and see our November 2026 important dates list for the rest of the month.
What is the quit-day planner?
The printable puts everything for the day on one page, with a lined area for “My reasons to quit.” It has four parts: the quit date, the five steps, the help lines and the milestone dates below. It also comes in an ink-saver version.
What are the five quit-day steps?
Smokefree.gov, run by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), lists five steps to manage quit day:
- Stick to Your Plan
- Get Support
- Stay Busy
- Avoid Smoking Triggers
- Stay Positive
The ACS says that “giving up smoking is a difficult journey, but you can increase your chances of success with a good plan and support.” It also says that getting help through counseling and medications doubles or even triples your chances of quitting successfully. Ask a health professional what fits you; this story gives no medical advice beyond what those sources say.
Where can you get free help?
| Program | How to reach it | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| 1-800-QUIT-NOW | Call 1-800-784-8669 (free quitline) | Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) |
| SmokefreeTXT | Text QUIT to 47848; the program lasts 6-8 weeks | NCI, Smokefree.gov |
| National Texting Portal | Text QUITNOW to 333888; free to sign up | CDC |
SmokefreeTXT and the CDC portal are different programs with different codes. For SmokefreeTXT, message and data rates may apply, and you can text HELP at any time for information on the program. We have not confirmed quitline hours, so none are listed.
What does quitting do, and when? A milestone calendar
The CDC’s “Benefits of Quitting Smoking” page (May 15, 2024) lists what changes over time. We mapped each stage onto dates for someone who quits on Nov. 19, 2026.
| CDC timeline | What the CDC says | Dates if you quit Nov. 19, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Minutes | Heart rate drops | Thu., Nov. 19, 2026 |
| Several days | Carbon monoxide level in the blood drops to that of someone who does not smoke | Late November 2026 |
| 1 to 12 months | Coughing and shortness of breath decrease | Sat., Dec. 19, 2026 to Fri., Nov. 19, 2027 |
| 1 to 2 years | Risk of heart attack drops sharply | Fri., Nov. 19, 2027 to Sun., Nov. 19, 2028 |
| 10 to 15 years | Added risk of lung cancer drops by half | 2036 to 2041 |
The CDC gives ranges, not promises for one person, so treat the dates as markers to check in on yourself. We left the “several days” row without an exact date for that reason.
How many U.S. adults smoke?
The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) FastStats page, last reviewed Aug. 25, 2026, reports that 9.1% of adults 18 and older currently smoke cigarettes and 6.7% currently use electronic cigarettes. The source is the 2025 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Early Release.
What we could not confirm
We did not confirm the year the Smokeout began, so we do not call 2026 an anniversary. We also did not find 2026 event details beyond the date rule on the ACS page.
