World Diabetes Day is Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026, and the 2026-27 theme is “Early action on diabetes,” according to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The campaign focus is early diagnosis and risk reduction. The World Health Organization (WHO) campaign page also says “14 November is World Diabetes Day.” Below are the November dates, why the day falls on Nov. 14, the official counts side by side, and a free one-page checklist.
What is the World Diabetes Day 2026 theme?
The IDF names “Early action on diabetes” as the theme for World Diabetes Day 2026-27, with the focus on early diagnosis and risk reduction. The World Health Organization (WHO) campaign page says the theme highlights the importance of earlier diagnosis and access to comprehensive care.
Which dates matter in November 2026?
Nov. 14 falls on a Saturday. American Diabetes Month, the U.S. campaign, covers the whole month. Put these on the November 2026 printable calendar.
| Date | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sun., Nov. 1 | American Diabetes Month begins | American Diabetes Association (ADA) |
| Mon., Nov. 9 | IDF webinar “Early action on diabetes saves lives,” 8:00-9:30 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) | IDF |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | World Diabetes Day; Sir Frederick Banting’s 135th birthday | IDF; WHO; Veterans Affairs Canada |
| Mon., Nov. 30 | American Diabetes Month ends | ADA |
The IDF lists the webinar at 14:00-15:30 Central European Time (CET). CET is UTC+1 and ET is UTC-5 after the Nov. 1 clock change, so we converted it to 8:00-9:30 a.m. ET.
What is American Diabetes Month 2026?
In an Oct. 29, 2026 press release titled “American Diabetes Month Celebrates What’s Possible,” the ADA said its campaign runs throughout November. The release says, “Every 21 seconds, someone in the U.S. is newly diagnosed with diabetes.” It promotes the ADA’s 60-Second Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test at diabetes.org/RiskTest. “What’s Possible” is the ADA’s November campaign headline, not the World Diabetes Day theme.
In Canada, Diabetes Canada lists “Diabetes Awareness Month 2026” on its press releases page.
Why is World Diabetes Day on Nov. 14?
Nov. 14 is the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, born Nov. 14, 1891, in Alliston, Ontario, according to Veterans Affairs Canada. That makes 2026 his 135th birthday, a number we computed. Diabetes Canada lists Banting House National Historic Site at 442 Adelaide Street North in London, Ontario.
The IDF and the WHO created the day in 1991. It became an official United Nations day through Resolution 61/225, adopted in December 2006, and was observed from 2007, per the UN digital library record and the IDF.
How many people have diabetes? The official counts
The counts below come from different agencies, so they do not match. The IDF counts adults aged 20-79, the WHO counts adults 18 and older, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) counts all ages in the U.S. The methods differ too. Compare each figure only with its own year and range.
| Source | Count | Scope and year |
|---|---|---|
| CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report | 40.1 million, 12.0% of the population | Diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes, U.S., 2023 |
| CDC | 115.2 million | U.S. adults 18 and older with prediabetes; the CDC page states no year |
| IDF Diabetes Atlas, 11th edition (Apr. 7, 2025) | 589 million; 252 million unaware | Adults aged 20-79 worldwide; projected 853 million by 2050 |
| WHO fact sheet (updated Nov. 14, 2024) | 830 million; 14% of adults | Adults 18 and older, 2022, up from 200 million in 1990 |
| WHO fact sheet | 1.6 million deaths | Directly caused by diabetes, 2021 |
What is on the early action checklist?
The printable has the four November dates above and four early-action steps taken from the sources: take the ADA risk test, ask a health care provider about screening, read the WHO campaign page and register for the IDF webinar. Early diagnosis is the campaign focus, and a provider is the person to ask whether screening fits you. This story and the sheet give no medical advice beyond what the sources say. The sheet also comes in an ink-saver version, and it ties in with our printable monthly calendar.

What we could not confirm
We did not find confirmed 2026 landmark-lighting lists, a 2026 National Diabetes Month theme from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), or free screening events, so none are listed.
