MCPS Calendar 2026-27: Winter Break Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, Last Day of School June 11

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students are off from Thursday, Dec. 24, 2026 through Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, and the last day of school is Friday, June 11, 2027, according to the district’s “2026-2027 School Calendar” (PDF). The first day is Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026. The calendar has 181 instructional days and names six possible make-up days, including April 22, May 17 and June 14-17, if schools close three or more days. The next date on it is Tuesday, Nov. 3, Election Day, when schools and offices are closed.

What are the MCPS make-up days if schools close?

The PDF footnote reads: “If the school year is disrupted by emergencies and schools are closed three or more days, dates identified as possible make-up instructional days include: April 22, May 17, June 14, 15, 16 and 17.” April 22, May 17 and June 14 are already no-school days for students.

Possible make-up day	Weekday	What the calendar lists today
April 22, 2027	Thursday	Non-Instructional Day
May 17, 2027	Monday	Non-Instructional Day
June 14, 2027	Monday	Grading and Planning for the end of term
June 15, 2027	Tuesday	Not listed; after the last day of school
June 16, 2027	Wednesday	Not listed; after the last day of school
June 17, 2027	Thursday	Not listed; after the last day of school

The district’s April 2026 announcement describes an “end-of-year make-up window: June 14-16”; the PDF adds June 17. If your plans depend on those days, check the latest district notice.

When is the MCPS winter break 2026?

The calendar does not print one winter break span. It lists Wednesday, Dec. 23 as an early release day for students, Dec. 24 and 25 as Winter Break Holiday with schools and offices closed, Dec. 28 and 29 as Non-Instructional Days, Dec. 30 and 31 as Systemwide Closure, and Jan. 1, 2027 as New Year’s Day.

From those rows we compute that students are off Thursday, Dec. 24 through Friday, Jan. 1, seven weekdays, and return Monday, Jan. 4, 2027. In December 2025 the district described winter break as “Dec. 23, 2026-Jan. 3, 2027”, a span that includes the weekends and the Dec. 23 early release. Plan the weeks on the December 2026 calendar, and compare other districts in our winter break 2026 roundup.

When is the MCPS spring break 2027?

Spring Break Holiday is listed for Friday, March 26 and Monday, March 29, 2027, with no school for students and teachers. March 30 and 31 are Non-Instructional Days, and April 1 and 2 are Systemwide Closures with schools and offices closed. We compute that students are off six weekdays, Friday, March 26 through Friday, April 2, and return Monday, April 5. The district said in April that the adjusted calendar preserves the length of the winter and spring breaks.

When is the last day of school at MCPS in 2027?

Friday, June 11, 2027 is the last day for students and an early release day. The calendar then lists Monday, June 14 as Grading and Planning for the end of term and Friday, June 18 as a Systemwide Closure. Mark the end of the year on the June 2027 calendar.

The date changed during the year. The Board of Education approved the calendar on Dec. 11, 2025, and the district’s announcement listed the last day of school as Wednesday, June 16, 2027. On April 29, 2026, the Board approved an adjusted calendar, and the current PDF lists June 11. MCPS says the adjusted calendar has 181 instructional days. The sources we read do not say why the end date moved, and we do not guess.

Are the 2027-28 MCPS dates set?

Not yet adopted. MCPS said in its Oct. 8, 2026 community update that the Board of Education received a presentation that day on proposed calendars for 2027-28 and 2028-29, with final adoption scheduled for the Board’s business meeting on Thursday, Nov. 19. This story covers only the adopted 2026-27 calendar.

What about the first day and the Student Transition Day?

Professional days for teachers run Aug. 17-21, 2026. Monday, Aug. 24 is a Student Transition Day, a non-instructional full day for students entering Grades K, 6 and 9, students entering Grade 3 in elementary schools that serve only Grades 3-5, and all students new to a school or MCPS. Tuesday, Aug. 25 is the first day of school for students. For a similar Washington-area calendar, see the Fairfax County Public Schools calendar.
