National Candy Corn Day falls on Friday, Oct. 30, 2026, the day before Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 31. It is an informal observance: we found no documented founder and no government proclamation behind it. The Museum of the Grand Prairie in Champaign County, Ill., marks it on Oct. 30 in its history of the candy. Below: how candy corn started, what a standard bag lists on the label, and a printable checklist for a Friday or Halloween treat table.

Who invented candy corn?
The short answer rests on oral history. History.com’s article on the candy says “oral histories identify the inventor of candy corn as George Renninger, an employee at Wunderle Candy Company in Philadelphia,” and that the candy “seems to have come out around the 1880s.” Wunderle was the first company to sell the multicolored treats, made of sugar and corn syrup, History.com says. What set them apart was “three hand-layered colors.”
The Goelitz company, now the Jelly Belly Candy Company, made candy corn famous. History.com says Goelitz picked up the recipe in 1898 and sold the kernels as “Chicken Feed.” The Museum of the Grand Prairie adds that Goelitz bought the recipe from Wunderle and that the company had been founded in 1869 by Gustav Goelitz.
How did candy corn become a Halloween candy?
Slowly. History.com says children of the late 1800s “most likely thought of them as candies to eat year-round,” and that “there was a dramatic spike in October advertising of candy corn beginning in the 1950s.” You can still buy it year-round. The October 30 date fits that later Halloween link, but no record we found shows who picked it.
What is in candy corn?
We checked the label of Brach’s Classic Candy Corn, a widely sold version. Its ingredients, in the order Brach’s lists them: sugar, corn syrup, confectioner’s glaze (shellac), salt, dextrose, gelatin, sesame oil, artificial flavor, honey, Yellow 6, Yellow 5 and Red 3. A serving is 15 pieces with 110 calories.
Three points from that list matter at a party:
- Gelatin is an animal product, so this candy corn is not vegetarian.
- Honey and shellac come from insects, which rules it out for many vegans.
- Sesame oil is on the list. Sesame became the ninth major food allergen on Jan. 1, 2023, under the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says.
Other brands use other recipes, so read the package you buy.
How to celebrate National Candy Corn Day
Keep it simple. Set out a bowl of candy corn with a spoon instead of open hands, or mix it with pretzels and popcorn for a sweet and salty snack. Put a card next to any homemade mix that lists every ingredient, and keep the original bags nearby. An orange, yellow and white table ties it together. If you are hosting Saturday too, our witches’ brew punch and party checklist covers the drinks, and our Frankenstein Friday 2026 story has a reading activity for the same Friday.
