Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, brings Connections #1244 from The New York Times, edited by Wyna Liu. Three tiles today end in -up, and the rules on our Connections page explain why a guess built on that ending would still cost a mistake. Hints come first, two per color, and the answers sit behind a spoiler heading.

Solving tips

Show the solving tips

Three tiles here end in the same two letters, and that shared ending means nothing. Sort them by meaning instead.

A tile that sounds like a fast car may pull you toward the vehicles, so ask whether it hauls anything. The purple set only shows itself once you read the last three or four letters of each tile on their own.

Why the traps worked

Backup, Pickup and Makeup all end in -up, and a careful solver could try to make that a set. They split three ways: a spare copy, a truck, and a word for what something is made of.

Hot Rod is a car, so it leans toward the trucks, yet it ends in rod, one of the light-sensing cells at the back of the eye. Woolens and Fabric both point to cloth; Fabric stays in yellow, and Woolens hides a lens.
