Hints for each word

Across

  • Row 1: first letter L, last letter Y. An adjective meaning very high or tall.
  • Row 3: first letter S, last letter E. A verb meaning to give off a steady light or glow.
  • Row 5: first letter R, last letter D. An adjective for something stiff that does not bend.

Down

  • Column 1: first letter L, last letter R. A noun for a device that makes a narrow, intense beam.
  • Column 3: first letter F, last letter G. A verb meaning to throw something hard and carelessly.
  • Column 5: first letter Y, last letter D. A verb meaning to give way, or to produce a crop.

What the swap structure of today’s board shows

The 21 tiles hold one letter four times and another three times. Two more letters appear twice each, and ten letters appear once. That makes 14 different letters across the grid, so plenty of tiles have no twin to confuse them with.

The route we list for the minimum is built from two kinds of swap. Five of its 10 swaps put two tiles on their final squares at once, and the other five settle one tile each. Five doubles and five singles add up to the 15 tiles that start out of place. All three of the first three swaps are doubles, so the board opens up quickly.

One square does more work than any other. Row 1, column 2 is touched by four of the 10 swaps, more often than any other square in the route. If you play it tile by tile, expect that square to change hands several times before it settles.

I . N . A

T . I . F
R S G O D

Six tiles are already green: L in row 1, column 1; Y in row 1, column 5; I in the center; R in row 5, column 1; G in row 5, column 3; and D in row 5, column 5.

A 10-swap route for five stars

Here is a 10-swap route, the minimum, that turns the starting grid into the solved grid. Play the swaps in order, since each one assumes the earlier ones are done. Ten swaps leave five of the 15 unused, so it earns five stars. Swaps 1, 2, 3, 7 and 10 each put two tiles home at once.
