The New York Times (NYT) Midi Crossword for Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, is a nine-by-nine grid with 30 clues by Evan Kalish. The puzzle data gives its title as “I am America” written in capitals with hyphens that cut the letters into pairs, and those hyphens are a clue in themselves. One Down clue mentions a Windows personal computer (PC). Each clue below has a hint hidden until you open it, and the full answers wait in a marked spoiler section.

How the hyphenated title works

The title reads “I am America,” with hyphens placed after the second, fourth, sixth and eighth letters. Taken as pairs, and the ten letters give five state postal codes: Iowa, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and California. That is the whole theme in miniature.

The grid does the same trick four times. The clue at 26-Across, on the bottom row, says its abbreviations spell 9-, 13-, 16- and 24-Across. Each of those four entries is an ordinary word or phrase that also splits cleanly into two-letter state codes: two pairs in each of the four-letter entries and four pairs in each of the eight-letter ones, 12 states in all. If you are stuck on a themed entry, test whether the first two letters you have could be a state.

Two Pixar clues and two hotel clues

Thursday’s clue list pairs up in a way that helps the solver. 15-Across and 24-Across both point to Pixar films, from 2007 and 2003, and both answers are the main animal in the film. 21-Across and 25-Across both mention a hotel: one asks for an amenity, the other for what you do with a room before the trip. Once one of a pair falls, the other clue is easier to read in the same light.

How the grid is built

The grid is 9 by 9, which is 81 squares: 14 black and 67 letters. A wall of black squares runs down the middle column in the top three and bottom three rows, which splits the grid into four corners joined by the middle rows. Row 5 is open only in its three center squares. By length, the entries run 4 of 3 letters, 22 of 4 letters, 2 of 8 letters and 2 of 9 letters. The two nine-letter entries are both Down answers, 4-Down and 5-Down, and run the full height of the grid.
