The New York Times (NYT) Midi Crossword for Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, is 11 squares wide and 10 tall, with 42 clues by Kareem Ayas. It is titled Seize the Moment. Two clues refer to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM), and one to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Each clue below has a hint hidden until you open it, and the full answers wait in a marked spoiler section.

What the Seize the Moment title points to

The puzzle data gives the title and no explanation of it, so we only report what the clues show. Three clues begin with the word Creature (9-Across, 11-Across and 18-Across), and each one asks for an animal. The widest entry, 27-Across, has 11 letters and asks where “each shaded creature” can be found, both in nature and in the grid. The saved data has no shading marks, so it does not show which squares are shaded. The three creature entries sit in rows 2 and 5 and the long entry sits in row 8.

The trickiest wording: 11-Down

Two clues end in a question mark: 11-Down and the long 27-Across. The 27-Across clue is the theme clue, covered above. The other one is “Walking stick?”, and it is the better test of wordplay. Read plainly, it suggests a cane or a hiking staff. The question mark says the plain reading is wrong. Ask what kind of pole a person could stand on while moving about, rather than lean on. The answer has five letters.

How the grid is built

The grid is 11 by 10, which is 110 squares: 24 black and 86 letters. It has 20 Across and 22 Down clues. By length, the entries run 15 of 3 letters, 16 of 4 letters, 9 of 5 letters, 1 of 7 letters, 1 of 11 letters. The longest is the 11-letter 27-Across, then the seven-letter 20-Across; five-letter entries come next, 9 of them.
