The New York Times (NYT) Mini Crossword for Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, is a five-by-five grid with 10 clues and a small hidden trick. The first two Across answers combine into one phrase. Inside them, circled letters spell a word that fits the theme, which is a neat trick for a puzzle this small. Below is a hint for every clue, then the full answers in a marked spoiler section.

Hints for every clue

Across

  • 1-Across (4 letters), With 5-Across, words whispered in a game of telephone: the first word of a request to hand something along.
  • 5-Across (4 letters), See 1-Across: two short words that finish the phrase.
  • 6-Across (5 letters), Modern way of creating images and text, for short: chatbots and image tools, abbreviated.
  • 8-Across (4 letters), Some fuzzy brown boots: a sheepskin brand from Australia.
  • 9-Across (4 letters), Whisper appropriately spelled (in order!) by the circled letters of 1-/5-Across: the sound you make to get a friend’s attention quietly.

Down

  • 1-Down (3 letters), Wilbur in “Charlotte’s Web,” e.g.: a farm animal.
  • 2-Down (5 letters), Devoured completely: two words, past tense of eat plus a direction.
  • 3-Down (5 letters), Spotify playlist makeup: tracks.
  • 4-Down (5 letters), Unexpected problems: also what a sweater does on a nail.
  • 7-Down (3 letters), Suffix with “novel” or “capital”: turns a word into a person.

Solving tips

Start short. The three-letter entries at 1-Down and 7-Down are gimmes, and between them they give you a letter in the top row and two in the bottom half, which is often enough to guess the boot brand at 8-Across and the five-letter verbs at 2-Down and 4-Down. Then the theme answer at 9-Across confirms the whole top half.
