Today’s Quordle from Merriam-Webster is puzzle #1731, for Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. All four words are common, but two start with the same letter and two have a repeated letter. Work through the clues below one board at a time; the answers are in a marked spoiler section at the end.

How Quordle works

You have nine guesses to solve four five-letter words. Every guess is entered on all four boards at once, and the tiles color like Wordle’s: green for the right letter in the right spot, yellow for a letter in the wrong spot, gray for a letter not in that word.

Clues for each word

Top left

• Vowels: two, O and I, next to each other.
• Meaning: slightly wet, the way a good cake should be.

Top right

• Vowels: A and E. One consonant appears twice.
• Meaning: a part in a pipe or an engine that opens and closes to control flow.

Bottom left

• Vowels: two E’s. Starts with the same letter as the top-right word.
• Meaning: a stanza of a poem or song, or a line from scripture.

Bottom right

• Vowels: one, O.
• Meaning: a compass direction, toward the top of the map.

A starter strategy for today

A first guess with R, S, T and E finds at least one letter in all four words. A second guess with O, I, V and N fills in most of the rest. Solve the board with the most green first, and do not spend a guess on a board that is already solved.
