Today’s Strands from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #962, for Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, and the theme clue is “On a higher level.” The clue is more literal than it sounds. Below are hints for the spangram and each theme word; the answers wait in a marked spoiler section at the end.

How Strands works

The board is six letters wide and eight tall. Theme words are made by linking letters that touch, up, down, sideways or diagonally, and every letter is used exactly once. One special answer, the spangram, names the theme and stretches from one side of the board to the opposite side. Find three non-theme words and you earn a hint that highlights the letters of a theme word.

Spangram hints

  • Hint 1: The theme is a place, not an idea.
  • Hint 2: Climb the stairs as far as they go, then pull down a ladder.
  • Hint 3: Three words, 10 letters, starting with a two-letter preposition.

Theme word hints

There are five theme words, all things families store up high and forget about:

  • 11 letters: what comes out of storage every December.
  • 9 letters: a high school book signed by classmates.
  • 7 letters: suitcases and carry-ons.
  • 6 letters, plural: big lidded chests, or an elephant’s noses.
  • 5 letters, plural: cardboard cubes for moving day.

Solving tips

Look for a cluster with the letters of the longest word first; at 11 letters it fills a big part of the board and shrinks the rest. If you get stuck, spell any ordinary words you can see to earn a hint.
