Today’s Wordle from The New York Times (NYT) is puzzle #1950, for Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026. It is a common everyday word, but it has a trap that costs guesses: a doubled letter. Work down the clues below one at a time, and only scroll to the last section if you want the answer itself.

How Wordle works

You get six tries to find a five-letter word. After each guess, a green tile means the right letter in the right spot, yellow means the letter is in the word but in another spot, and gray means it is not in the word at all. A letter that appears twice is only marked twice if you guess it twice.

Five clues, gentle to strong

  1. Vowels: there is only one, and it is E. The last letter is a Y, which works like a vowel here.
  2. Repeated letter: yes. One consonant appears twice, back to back.
  3. First letter: P.
  4. Meaning: a noun for something small that people often say is not worth much.
  5. Strong nudge: you might find one on the sidewalk, and the saying says to pick it up for luck.

Guessing tips for today

A starter with N and E, such as “tenor,” “inner” or “canoe,” reveals two of the letters at once. If you see a green or yellow N, try placing a second N right next to it before you test new consonants. Words ending in Y with a single vowel are rarer than they look, which narrows the field quickly.

The answer to Wordle #1950 is Penny.

A penny is a one-cent coin in the United States and the smallest coin in Britain. The U.S. Mint stopped producing new pennies for circulation in late 2025, which has kept the word in the news. The doubled N is what trips players up: many guess a word with one N, see it turn yellow or green, and only then think to repeat it.
