The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says its Saver’s Match pays up to $1,000 per person each year, a match of up to 50% of what you contribute to a retirement account, for contributions made starting in 2027. The amount depends on modified adjusted gross income (MAGI): the full match needs $41,000 or less for joint filers, $30,750 or less for heads of household and $20,500 or less for single filers. The rules are not final. Treasury and the IRS announced on Aug. 7, 2026 that they intend to issue proposed regulations, and payments are to start in 2028.
This story gives the IRS income table, our own match-rate table worked out from the statute, and the steps from a 2027 contribution to the match. Our one-page printable, “Saver’s Match 2027 Income Limits by Filing Status”, holds the three filing-status limits.
Saver’s Match income limits for 2027
The IRS page, last reviewed Oct. 22, 2026, lists three bands for each filing status.
| Filing status | Full match | Partial match | No match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Married filing jointly, qualifying surviving spouse | Up to $41,000 | $41,001-$70,999 | $71,000 and above |
| Head of household | Up to $30,750 | $30,751-$53,249 | $53,250 and above |
| Single, married filing separately | Up to $20,500 | $20,501-$35,499 | $35,500 and above |
These are MAGI amounts. The IRS says the limits “will be adjusted for inflation in years after 2027” and that as income rises, the match rate falls.
What the match is worth at each income level
The IRS page does not print the rate between the full-match and no-match limits. The statute, 26 U.S. Code § 6433, does. It sets a 50% rate on contributions up to $2,000 and lowers it by a share of 50 percentage points equal to the share of the phaseout range your MAGI has used. The phaseout range is $30,000 for joint filers, three-quarters of that for heads of household ($22,500) and half for everyone else ($15,000). The law rounds the reduction down to the next lowest whole percentage point.
The table below is our calculation from that formula, not an IRS table, and the IRS has said its rules are not final. Match = rate x the first $2,000 contributed, shown for a $2,000 contribution.
| Share of range used | Joint MAGI | Head of household MAGI | Single MAGI | Match rate | Match on $2,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0% | $41,000 | $30,750 | $20,500 | 50% | $1,000 |
| 20% | $47,000 | $35,250 | $23,500 | 40% | $800 |
| 40% | $53,000 | $39,750 | $26,500 | 30% | $600 |
| 60% | $59,000 | $44,250 | $29,500 | 20% | $400 |
| 80% | $65,000 | $48,750 | $32,500 | 10% | $200 |
| 100% | $71,000 | $53,250 | $35,500 | 0% | $0 |
Between these steps the rate drops in whole points. A joint filer with MAGI of $42,000 uses 1/30 of the range, a reduction of 1.67 points that rounds down to 1, so the rate is 49% and the match on $2,000 is $980. A single filer at $25,000 has used 30% of the range, a 15-point reduction, so the rate is 35% and the match is $700.
If you save less than $2,000, the match is the rate times what you saved. At a 50% rate, $600 contributed earns $300.
Who qualifies for the Saver’s Match?
The IRS page lists these requirements:
- You contribute to your retirement plan or an individual retirement account (IRA), with no minimum amount.
- You are 18 by the end of the tax year.
- You are not a student as defined in section 152(f)(2) of the tax code.
- You are not claimed as a dependent.
- You are a U.S. resident for tax purposes.
Eligible plans include a 401(k), 403(b) or governmental 457(b) plan, and the IRS also lists traditional and Roth IRAs. Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts are excluded. The IRS page does not name other plan types, so we do not say whether they qualify.
When does the Saver’s Match pay out?
- 2027: contributions you make starting in 2027 count, per the IRS.
- 2028: you file Form 8880-A with your 2027 federal tax return, which the IRS says is filed in 2028.
- After you file: the IRS says the match is “deposited directly into your designated retirement account.” IR-2026-89 says it will be paid to eligible taxpayers starting in 2028.
Neither the IRS page nor IR-2026-89 gives a deposit date, so the date of the 2028 deposit is not yet announced as of Nov. 7, 2026.
| Date | Day | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Jan. 1, 2027 | Friday | Contributions made starting in 2027 count (IRS); Treasury says it will launch TrumpIRA.gov (IR-2026-89) |
| 2028 | n/a | File Form 8880-A with the 2027 return; match payments start (IRS, IR-2026-89) |
What is still not final?
IR-2026-89 says Notice 2026-48 announces an intent to issue proposed regulations under section 6433. The public comment period closed on Oct. 5, 2026. Until final rules exist, details can change. The release also says the match replaces the Saver’s Credit for retirement contributions.
The 2027 limits on 401(k) and IRA contributions are not yet announced. For 2026 the IRS set the 401(k) limit at $24,500 and the IRA limit at $7,500 (IR-2025-111, Nov. 13, 2025).
