UK Tax Year 2027-28: Starts 6 April 2027, and the Key HMRC Dates
The UK 2027-28 tax year runs from 6 April 2027 to 5 April 2028 on GOV.UK's pattern; HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) dates from 6 April 2027 to May 2028 are below.
Key dates
In this article
The UK 2027-28 tax year starts on Tuesday 6 April 2027 and ends on Wednesday 5 April 2028, following the 6 April to 5 April pattern that GOV.UK shows for 2025-26 and 2026-27. This story applies the dates that GOV.UK and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) publish to that year, adds the weekday of each, and ends with a one-page printable.
When does the 2027-28 tax year start and end?
GOV.UK’s Self Assessment deadlines page says: “The last tax year started on 6 April 2025 and ended on 5 April 2026.” Its Income Tax rates page gives “from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027” for the current year. Moving the same pattern forward one year gives 6 April 2027 to 5 April 2028. GOV.UK has not published a page for 2027-28 itself that we read, so treat that span as the pattern applied, and check the April printable calendar for the weekday.
What HMRC dates fall between April 2027 and May 2028?
GOV.UK states most of these dates as a day and month, not a year. The table applies each rule to the next date it produces; for example, the 31 July payment on account falls in 2027 and the 31 January return falls in 2028. The weekday column is our calculation. We have not read an HMRC rule for dates that fall on a weekend, so check GOV.UK before relying on a Saturday or Sunday.
| Date | Weekday | Who | What GOV.UK or HMRC says |

What changes on 6 April 2027?
Four things are dated to the start of the year, all from official pages.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. GOV.UK’s guidance, updated 26 March 2026, says people with income over £50,000 use it from 6 April 2026, people over £30,000 “will need to use it from 6 April 2027”, and people over £20,000 from 6 April 2028. HMRC’s 5 October 2026 news release says it “will extend to sole traders and landlords earning more than £30,000 from 6 April 2027.” GOV.UK’s quarterly update page ties each period to a date: to 5 July, send by 7 August; to 5 October, 7 November; to 5 January, 7 February; to 5 April, 7 May.
Cash Individual Savings Account (ISA) limit. An HMRC policy paper dated 17 September 2026 set out a cut of the cash ISA limit to £12,000 for savers under 65 from 6 April 2027. The Budget 2026 document, published on 28 October 2026, reverses it: “the government has decided not to reduce the cash ISA limit, so that it remains at £20,000.” Our UK Budget 2026 story covers the rest of that Budget. GOV.UK says the most you can save across ISAs in 2026-27 is £20,000; we found no page that states the overall 2027-28 figure.
Savings income rates. The Budget 2026 document says “the savings basic rate will be 24%, the savings higher rate will be 44%, and the savings additional rate will be 49%,” to be legislated in Finance Bill 2026-27 and to “take effect from 6 April 2027.” That adds two percentage points to the rise HMRC announced in November 2025, which would have set the rates at 22%, 42% and 47%.
Thresholds. The Personal Allowance of £12,570 and the basic rate limit of £37,700 are maintained until 5 April 2031, per the GOV.UK policy paper of 26 November 2025, so they stay the same through 2027-28.
What is the monthly PAYE payment date?
For employers who pay PAYE monthly, GOV.UK says payment is due “the 22nd of the next tax month”, and a cheque sent by post “must reach HMRC by the 19th of the month.” This is a rule for every month, so the table lists only the two employer dates that GOV.UK names with a month.
