Veterans Day is Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026, and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) posts its 2026 poster and a 32-page teachers guide for free. Below is our own one-page activity sheet with a quiz, a thank-you note and a checklist, followed by a guide to the VA files, where to find each and how to print them. For the holiday itself, see when Veterans Day 2026 falls and what closes.
What is on the free Veterans Day activity sheet?
The sheet is one US Letter page. It has the Nov. 11, 2026 date card, five history facts with years, a five-question quiz whose answers sit on a strip you cut off, lined space for a thank-you note to a veteran, and a checklist. We wrote the checklist as advice; the history facts and quiz answers come from VA pages. We do not offer coloring pages or cards.
| Part of the sheet | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Date card | Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2026 |
| History facts | Five dated facts, 1918 to 1978, from the VA |
| Quiz | Five questions, answers on the cut-off strip |
| Thank-you note | Lines for “Dear”, “Thank you for” and “From” |
| Checklist | Four ways to mark the day, our advice |
Which Veterans Day facts and quiz answers does the sheet use?
All come from the VA’s “History of Veterans Day” page (last updated June 10, 2024) unless noted.
| Date | Fact, per the VA |
|---|---|
| Nov. 11, 1918 | An armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect, halting the fighting of World War I (then called the Great War), on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month; the day is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” |
| Nov. 1919 | President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. |
| May 13, 1938 | An act approved that day made Nov. 11 a legal holiday. |
| June 1, 1954 | Public Law 380 made Nov. 11 a day to honor American veterans of all wars. |
| June 28, 1968 | The Uniform Holiday Bill (Public Law 90-363) was signed. |
| Oct. 25, 1971 | The first Veterans Day under the new law was “observed with much confusion.” |
| Sept. 20, 1975 | President Gerald R. Ford signed Public Law 94-97, which returned the observance to Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. |
The quiz answers: the armistice is remembered on Nov. 11, 1918; Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first Armistice Day in Nov. 1919; Nov. 11 became a day for veterans of all wars on June 1, 1954; the national ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns; and Veterans Day has no apostrophe because, the VA says, it “is not a day that ‘belongs’ to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans.”
The VA’s Veterans Day page adds that the national ceremony is held each year on Nov. 11 at Arlington National Cemetery and starts “precisely at 11:00 a.m.” We list it as 11 a.m. Eastern Time (ET) on the sheet; Arlington is in that time zone.
Where do the VA’s free Veterans Day printables live?
The VA spreads its files over several pages. This is where each one is, as of Nov. 4, 2026.
| File | Where | Details from the VA |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 Veterans Day poster, 11” x 17” | VA poster download page (updated Sept. 17, 2026) | “Compatible with most office printers”; the VA recommends “Fit to page” |
| 2026 Veterans Day poster, 18” x 24” | Same page | Measures 18.25” x 24.25” to include bleeds; trim 0.125” from each side |
| Teachers Resource Guide | VA guide page (updated Sept. 28, 2026) | PDF, 32 pages, 6 MB |
| Past posters, 1978 to 2026 | VA Veterans Day Poster Gallery on Flickr, linked from the VA Veterans Day page | “Browse the collection of Veterans Day posters from 1978 until 2026.” |
We do not reproduce the poster here; use the VA’s links. The VA News announcement of June 30, 2026, by Veterans Day Coordinator Dusan Ilic, says the poster recognizes America’s 250th anniversary and combines the modern American flag with an early American flag. It will also be the cover of the official program for the Veterans Day commemoration at Arlington National Cemetery on Nov. 11, 2026.
How do you print the VA’s 2026 poster?
For a home or office printer, the VA’s poster page says you can print the poster at your location and offers the 11” x 17” version. Use “Fit to page” if the VA’s tabloid size does not match your paper. For a print shop, the 18” x 24” version is the one with bleeds; the shop trims 0.125” from each side.
| Commercial print spec (VA) | Value |
|---|---|
| Paper | 80# White Gloss Coated Cover |
| Color | 4-Color Process with Flood Gloss Varnish |
What is in the VA’s Teachers Resource Guide?
The 32-page PDF is built for classrooms. The VA’s news post of Nov. 2, 2026 lists its contents: understanding Veterans Day, classroom-ready lessons, student activities and projects, scholarship opportunities, guidance for school and community events, and flag etiquette. The activities include writing prompts, art projects, interviews with Veterans and service-learning opportunities. The VA’s guide page says there are about 18 million Veterans living among us, in every state and territory. On its Facts and Information page the VA says: “Teachers’ Resource Guides may be downloaded. You may make as many additional copies as you need.”
How can a class or family mark Veterans Day 2026?
These four steps are our suggestions, and they match the checklist on the sheet.
- Watch the national ceremony at 11 a.m. ET on Nov. 11.
- Display the flag. Under 4 U.S. Code (U.S.C.) section 6(d), the flag should be displayed on all days, especially listed ones that include “Veterans Day, November 11.”
- Read the VA’s Teachers Resource Guide together.
- Write the thank-you note on the sheet and give or send it to a veteran.
What does the law say about the date, and what do people get wrong?
Under 5 U.S.C. 6103, as published by the Cornell Legal Information Institute (LII), the federal holiday list includes “Veterans Day, November 11.” The VA says Veterans Day “is always observed officially on November 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.” It is not Memorial Day: the VA says poppies are traditionally worn on Memorial Day, not Veterans Day. Mark the date on the November 2026 printable calendar, see Veterans Day free meals and discounts, and check Veterans Day parades by city.
