Hawaii Public Schools Calendar 2026-27: Winter Break, Spring Break, May 27 Last Day

Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) public schools have no school on Thursday, Nov. 26 and Friday, Nov. 27, 2026, from Dec. 21, 2026 to Jan. 1, 2027, and from Mar. 15-19, 2027, by the department’s 2026-2027 Official School Calendar. Students finish Thursday, May 27, 2027. Fall break (Oct. 5-9) and Election Day (Nov. 3) are done, so Veterans’ Day on Nov. 11 is the next day off, then Thanksgiving.

The department’s School Calendar page says “These calendars apply to all public schools in Hawaiʻi—except for Holomua Elementary (which is a multi-track campus) and charter schools.” The PDF footer reads “Approved June 1, 2023; Amended on March 30, 2026.” It does not say why it was amended.

When are the Hawaii public school breaks in 2026-27?

Weekdays off are our count from the department’s dates.

Break	No school	Weekdays off	Students return
Fall break	Mon., Oct. 5 to Fri., Oct. 9, 2026 (passed)	5	Mon., Oct. 12
Thanksgiving	Thu., Nov. 26 to Fri., Nov. 27, 2026	2	Mon., Nov. 30

Spring break	Mon., Mar. 15 to Fri., Mar. 19, 2027	5	Mon., Mar. 22

The calendar lists Nov. 26 as Thanksgiving and Nov. 27 as a “School Holiday.” On Jan. 4, 2027 it shows “Teacher Workday (no students),” and its header gives the second semester as “January 5, 2027 - May 27, 2027.” Plan the Thanksgiving week on the November 2026 calendar, and compare other districts in our winter break 2026 roundup.

Why does Hawaii have two long weekends in late March 2027?

Good Friday falls on Mar. 26, 2027. Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Day falls on Mar. 26 as well, so the calendar moves the school observance to Monday, Mar. 29 (“March 29: Kuhio Day (school observed)”). That gives a four-day weekend from Friday, Mar. 26 to Monday, Mar. 29, one week after spring break ends on Mar. 19. Check the spring break 2027 roundup if you are comparing with other states.

When is Institute Day in Hawaii in 2027?

The calendar sets one Institute Day, a day with no students, during the week of Feb. 8-12, 2027. The date for each island is not yet announced, so do not book travel around that week until your school confirms it. Presidents’ Day follows on Monday, Feb. 15.

When does the Hawaii school year start and end?

Teachers work July 28-31, 2026 with no students. The department’s page says the “Student instructional year begins Aug. 3, 2026.” The first semester ends Dec. 18, 2026, and the second runs from Jan. 5 to May 27, 2027. Teachers finish on May 28, and commencement is “no sooner than May 21, 2027.” The calendar counts 180 student days. The free printable puts these dates on one page, and our printable school-year calendar page has more layouts. For another West Coast district, see the San Diego Unified calendar.
